Discover Totalán: Landscape, Culture and Chanfaina

Totalán lies on the edge of Los Montes Nature Park and is part of the Ruta de la Pasa, one of five routes in the Axarquía. The area of Totalán stretches along the basin of the stream that bears the name Totalán. The terrain around Totalán is very rugged; the hills, marked by erosion channels, are mostly covered with olive trees, almond trees and natural vegetation. Typical Mediterranean scrubland with thyme and Spanish lavender can be found in the surroundings of Totalán. The Mirador del Algarrobo offers panoramic views of Totalán and the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Culture and Crafts

In Andalusia’s heritage catalogue, the Torre Salazar is registered as a B.I.C. monument of immovable cultural heritage; the registration dates from 25 June 1985. The Torre del Violín, also known as Mirador El Zagal, is a historic and cultural attraction in Totalán. It was built in 2010 and commemorates a battle between Arabs and Christians; a violin at its top symbolises this battle. The old washhouse of Totalán preserves its original structure of stones and water channels through which water flows.

The entrance square of Totalán was named after Antonio Molina; a bust was erected there in 2003 and a ceramic commemorative plaque was installed in his honour in 2006. Antonio Molina spent a large part of his childhood and youth with his family in Totalán. Craftspeople in Totalán continue to work with willow rods and reeds, keeping these craft traditions alive. Next to the Plaza y busto a Antonio Molina are a waterfall over rocks, a garden with native plants, green spaces, benches and facilities for children.

Trails and Local History

The Ruta Totalín is a freely accessible open-air interpretation centre that introduces visitors to the history and landscapes of the town in Totalán, accompanied by the chameleon Totalín. The SL-A 68 Moclinejo–Totalán hiking trail is 8.4 km long and connects Moclinejo and Totalán. It is dated 2010 and is associated with the Diputación de Málaga – Turismo. The two formats can be compared separately according to their content and route length.

Local Cuisine and Festivals

Día de la Chanfaina, the festival of the chanfaina typical of Totalán, takes place every November in Totalán. At Día de la Chanfaina, visitors are offered chanfaina accompanied by sweet wine from the region.
