Genalguacil: Art, History and Nature

More than 200 artists have left works throughout the town’s whitewashed streets and squares through the Encuentros de Arte de Genalguacil, creating a sculpture forest. Plaza del Pueblo is a meeting place and a suitable starting point for exploring the streets of Genalguacil, shaped by sculptures, murals and works of art. Those who want to discover the town through art will find a public experience here that is not limited to a museum space.

Other destinations on the same level are Torremolinos, Bobadilla, Fuengirola, Cartaojal, Cuevas Bajas, Romo Cuevas, Fuente De Piedra and Moclinejo.

Culture

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Fernando Centeno opened in 2004 and received its current name in 2012. The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Genalguacil houses the permanent collection of Genalguacil Pueblo Museo. The museum has seasonal opening days: in winter, it is open from Wednesday to Sunday; in summer, from Thursday to Sunday and daily in August. This different schedule makes the time of year an important detail when planning a museum visit.

In the public space, contemporary art meets a historic townscape. The Conjunto Histórico de Genalguacil features a street layout of Arab origin and whitewashed houses. Architecture, works of art and museum spaces thus offer different ways of looking closely at the town.

History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Mártir de Verona was destroyed during the Morisco Rebellion of 1570 and rebuilt in the 18th century. It has three naves separated by round arches and an octagonal bell tower. Its construction history and surviving design elements are connected here in a specific context.

Genalguacil holds a feria and festivals in honor of Saint Peter Martyr of Verona. Huerto del Niño is a tradition in Genalguacil celebrated on Easter Sunday. Religious history and recurring feast days thus provide different cultural ways of approaching the town.

Nature

Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja is a natural area. The Los Realillos hiking trail runs along part of the Los Reales ridge and ends in the middle of the Spanish fir forest at the Plazoleta de Genalguacil. The Paseo de los Pinsapos begins with a winding descent through a forest of Spanish firs on peridotite and through vegetation typical of the region.

On the Paseo de los Pinsapos, Iberian ibex, common chameleons, Andalusian wall lizards, black kites and European honey buzzards can be observed; other birds can also be seen there. The Mirador del Valle del Genal offers views of the Genal Valley and the chestnut groves around Genalguacil. The trails, wildlife observations and viewpoint therefore provide different focal points for planning your day.
