Discover Jubrique: Nature, Trails and Culture

Jubrique reveals itself through trails, water and traces of local history. The protected Valle del Genal covers 23,555 hectares and extends across 17 municipalities. Its extensive network of livestock trails and forestry tracks in public mountain areas are frequently used for cycling routes, hikes and sporting activities.

Trails and landscape

The PR-A 291 from Jubrique to Benalauría is a 9.8 km linear hiking trail. The outward journey is estimated to take 3 hours and 35 minutes; the trail is classified as moderate. It begins in Jubrique in the area of the municipal swimming pool, known as La Llanada, and is accessible on foot and by bicycle.

Jubrique’s network of hiking trails includes the SL-A 193 Sendero de la Solana and the SL-A 194 Sendero de Matagallar. The SL-A 195 Sendero al Charco Esteban is a linear hiking trail within this network. The Jubrique–Genalguacil route descends to the Río Monardilla and crosses the watercourse on a wooden bridge built by local residents. Along the PR-A 291, La Tenería is identified as a former tannery for leather processing.

Water spots

Charco Azul is a natural pool and waterfall in the Arroyo del Quejigo, a tributary of the Río Genal. It has two small waterfalls, each around three metres high; the pool is approximately 20 m × 10 m in size and up to 3 m deep. Charco Azul lies within the municipal boundary of Jubrique, but is more easily reached from the Genalguacil–Peñas Blancas road.

Charco Redondo is a large natural pool in Jubrique (Málaga), considered an inland beach, with easy access and facilities on site.

Culture and history

The parish church of San Francisco de Asís has a tower porch with an octagonal top. The steep streets of Jubrique, of Arab origin, converge at Plaza de Andalucía. The Church of San Francisco de Asís was formerly an Arab mosque.

The Cruz del Chorrillo is a small octagonal chapel with Moorish-influenced architectural elements. On 3 May, a pilgrimage leads to the Ermita de la Santa Cruz del Chorrillo. Río Lavar was formerly Jubrique’s public laundry; today, only the fountain remains there. The Fiestas de San Francisco de Asís in Jubrique are classified as intangible cultural heritage.

Local traditions

At the Museo de Artes Populares y del Aguardiente, visitors can learn about the history of wine and aguardiente in Jubrique. Old vineyards in Jubrique recall the once-significant local production of wine and aguardiente, which included up to 60 factories in the 18th century.
