Trigueros: Dolmen de Soto, Churches and Festivals

Trigueros tells its story through stone, colour, festivals and traditional craftsmanship. This is particularly evident at the Dolmen de Soto: its 21.50-metre-long, covered gallery faces east and consists of 67 orthostats bearing engravings and paintings.

Culture and History

Visits to the Dolmen de Soto are only possible with prior reservation; self-guided, guided and group visits are available.

The Iglesia de San Antonio Abad is a Gothic-Mudéjar building. It was rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake; its façade and bell tower are Neoclassical in design. Its Gospel and Epistle chapels contain 15th-century frescoes.

The Colegio de Santa Catalina in Trigueros was founded towards the end of the second third of the 16th century. The surviving church of the Colegio is particularly characterised by the Venetian Renaissance in its exterior appearance. Traditional brickmaking remains active in Trigueros. The bricks are air-dried, the moulds are worked by hand and traditional kilns are used.

Paths and Tranquillity

The Vía Verde Los Molinos de Agua can be travelled on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback, and is also accessible to wheelchair users.

Pilar de la Media Legua is a recreational area with picnic spots for relaxing. At the same time, Pilar de la Media Legua is a Roman cattle trough dating from the 2nd century AD, located on the edge of the former Roman road from Seville to Ayamonte, known as the “Camino de Sevilla”, towards the Dolmen de Soto; it is surrounded by wheat and sunflower fields.

Festivals

The traditional Capeas in Trigueros take place from late August to early September and span an entire week, with Encierros in the morning and Capeas in the afternoon.

The patron saint festivities of San Antonio Abad in Trigueros take place on the last weekend of January, provided that the following Monday and Tuesday do not fall in February. They include a novena, the blessing of animals and the Tercia procession.

For the “Las Candelas” festival, the first sheaves are collected from the fields in Trigueros after the Christmas season ends.
