Discover Víznar: Acequia, Culture and Hiking Trails
Víznar can be discovered through its cultural history and the paths leading into the mountain landscape. Along its historic route from the Fuente de Aynadamar to Granada, the Acequia de Aynadamar runs through Víznar. Between Alfacar and Víznar, a restored section can be seen on the right-hand side of the road in the direction of Alfacar–Víznar.
Culture
The Palacio del Cuzco in Víznar was built in the 18th century in the classical Italian style and completed in 1795. Several scenes from Cervantes’ Don Quixote are depicted in its lower gallery.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar was built between 1530 and 1541, modelled on rural Mudéjar churches. It preserves a collection of 78 Renaissance and Baroque works, including paintings, sculptures, goldsmithery, furniture, ceramics and textiles.
The Semana Cultural de Víznar takes place in August and includes exhibitions on handicrafts, painting, agricultural implements, the flora and aromatic plants of the Sierra de Víznar, García Lorca and photography. Events dedicated to Federico García Lorca take place at every edition. On the night of 18–19 August, a commemorative event is held at Los Pozos in the Barranco de Víznar, on the Camino de Fuente Grande, the site of mass shootings during the Spanish Civil War and the scene associated with the death of the poet Federico García Lorca.
Hiking
The hiking trail to Cerro del Maúllo leads to trenches from the Spanish Civil War and to a viewpoint overlooking the Sierra Nevada. It is 3,520 metres long, has a low level of difficulty and an estimated duration of one and a half hours.
The hiking trail to Cruz de Víznar is 5.7 kilometres long, also has a low level of difficulty and an estimated duration of two hours. Its panoramic views extend across the Vega de Granada and the Sierra Nevada; at the same time, the trail makes it possible to experience the transition from the mountains to the flat plain of the Depression of Granada. The different lengths and estimated durations indicate two time frames for planning your own excursion.
Nature
The CRIN (Centro de Recepción e Interpretación de la Naturaleza) is located in the Puerto Lobo area and can be reached from the centre of Víznar. The area of the Sierra de Huétor connected with Víznar offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking; ecological trails connect recreational areas, springs and viewpoints.
Peñón de Víznar reaches an altitude of 1,543 metres; from there, wooded and rocky heights and narrow gorges can be seen.
Culinary Traditions
Víznar has had a bread-making tradition since at least the 17th century. The traditional bakeries of Víznar produced bread, cakes, hornazos and Moorish pastries, supplying the neighbouring population of Granada.
For the San Blas festival on 3 February, the so-called Roscas de San Blas are baked in a local oven about a week beforehand and distributed from door to door on the morning of the festival.
You can also find Cájar, Guájar-Alto, Tózar, Dílar, Los Guajares, Jerez Del Marquesado, Pinos Del Valle and Zafarraya.
