Torvizcón: Cultural Heritage, Festivals and Cork Oak Forest

The historic protected area Sitio Histórico de la Alpujarra Media y La Taha is a legally protected cultural heritage area and also extends across Torvizcón. Sacred architecture, folklore, festival traditions and distinctive landscapes combine to create a varied picture of the town.

Culture and History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Torvizcón was built in the Mudéjar style. The church of Torvizcón was one of seven churches built in La Alpujarra at the beginning of the 16th century. It was burned down during the Morisco Rebellion. On the village square stands the 18th-century fountain known as El Pilón.

The Museo del Esparto “Agustín Góngora” is a folklore museum in Torvizcón. It displays old objects from village life and agricultural work. It also features life-size figures of people and animals made by its founder, José Joaquín Góngora. In the vicinity of Piedras Blancas, the Pisadora, the Prensa and the Trasegadora form a group of exhibits of particular folkloric interest. The museum remains open.

Crafts and Culinary Delights

The Lagar de los Rafaeles olive mill preserves the building tradition of the Alpujarra. Bodegas La Divisa offers guided tours through the vineyards as well as the production and ageing rooms. A visit to Bodegas La Divisa includes a tasting of typical products from the Sierra de la Contraviesa and La Alpujarra.

Festivals and Dates

The Fiesta de los Chiscos is recognised in Andalusia as a festival of tourist interest. It includes large bonfires in honour of the saint, lit in the individual districts. The festival in honour of the Santísima Virgen del Rosario takes place during the first week of August. The Semana Cultural de Torvizcón also takes place during the first week of August; it includes sporting and cultural activities.

During the celebrations surrounding the Marranillo de San Antón, the residents of Torvizcón jointly raise and feed the traditional animal before it is to be raffled among the residents. The San Marcos tradition involves eating in the countryside on 25 April and enjoying typical hornazos made from bread with a hard-boiled egg. Natural Environment

The Alcornocal de La Haza del Lino cork oak forest is a dense forest and the only surviving cork oak stand in eastern Andalusia. Most of the Sierra de la Contraviesa lies within the municipality of Torvizcón. In the Barranco Barbacana, there are floodplain and riverside forests with poplars, broom and holm oaks.

The Rambla de Torvizcón rises in the Alcornocal de La Haza del Lino and flows into the Río Guadalfeo. Forest, riverside vegetation and the course of the waterway represent different aspects of nature that can be considered separately when making personal plans.
