Soportújar reveals its distinctive character in its streets: the village streets form a themed attraction centered around witches and feature figures of witches, goblins, elves, sorceresses and dragons. A replica of Baba Yaga’s house can be seen on a corner in the upper part of Soportújar. Traditional Alpujarran tinaos, meaning covered extensions or passageways, can be found throughout the village.
Culture and Village Character
In the center of Soportújar, the houses are grouped around a 16th-century church that was previously a mosque. The cultural themes bring together visible details of the village, traditional stories and a regular August program. The Feria del Embrujo takes place every year in August in Soportújar. Its program includes activities, music, poetry, theater and circus; the Noche de las Brujas features performances, queimada and music.
Special Places
The Fuente del Dragón can be reached from the Plaza de Abastos via Calle Estación. According to tradition, its water has aphrodisiac properties and promotes fertility. At the Mirador de Soportújar, views open up over the natural surroundings and neighboring villages such as Carataunas and Cáñar; at its fountain, statues of an experienced witch and her apprentice stand beside a large cauldron.
Another distinct facet is the Osel Ling Buddhist meditation center. It is located at an elevation of 1,600 meters and is dedicated to meditation in seclusion. Depending on whether you plan to focus on village motifs, stories, viewpoints or a quiet retreat, your days in Soportújar can take on different emphases.
Landscape and Trails
The upper part of the Sierra is included in the Sierra Nevada National Park. A traditional path leads from the village of Soportújar uphill over terraces and small agricultural properties to the forest track near the Casa Forestal de Soportújar; the forest track is reached in less than an hour. The combination of the village path, terraced landscape and higher-elevation forest track makes it possible to compare different trail lengths and daily rhythms without equating the individual routes.
The Sendero Sulayr GR-240, the Sendero GR-7, the Área Recreativa de Puente Palo and the Ruta Cicloturista Transnevada are part of this network of paths. A section of the Sendero Sulayr GR-240 runs from Puente Palo to Capileira through the Acequia del Almiar. A section of the Sendero GR-7 leads in the direction of Cáñar. The paths mentioned connect different names, directions and sections of trails around Soportújar.
Typical Dishes
Cuisine is also part of the village’s character: typical dishes from Soportújar include Puchero de hinojos, Plato alpujarreño, Migas, Fritá de verduras and Gachas.
