Nature

The Sierra de la Alfaguara is part of Sierra de Huétor Nature Park. In the La Alfaguara Arboretum, Spanish firs and several centuries-old cedars grow; the cedars are more than 35 metres tall. The arboretum developed from a former forest nursery and is now used as an arboretum and botanical nature trail.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Alfacar dates from the mid-16th century and stands on the site of a former Arab mosque. The Baños Árabes are the remains of baths from the Andalusian period; they date from the 13th to the 15th century and follow the layout of parallel rooms from the Zirid period.

The Arco de Somera was part of the walled settlement of Alfacar and may have been one of its town gates. The Parque Federico García Lorca was laid out in 1986 with various fountains, paths and walkways. Fragments of Lorca’s poems can be found on the wall surrounding the main square.

Trails and Activities

The Puerto Alfacar–Alfaguara circular hiking trail is located in the municipality of Alfacar. The route is 7,477 metres long, takes approximately two and a half hours and is rated easy. The trail to the Cueva del Agua in Alfacar is also an easy route and takes three hours.

Access to the Cueva del Agua is closed; the cave can therefore only be viewed from the outside. Sierra de Huétor Nature Park has trenches from the Spanish Civil War that can be visited. These include several improved trails of scenic and historical interest.

The nature park has recreational areas set up for camping and sports activities in nature. Climbing is designated as a suitable activity at Puerto de Alfacar; a permit from the nature park is required for this. The different time frames for the trails and the permit required for climbing can be considered separately when planning the day.

Bread-making Tradition

The protected geographical indication Pan de Alfacar covers traditionally produced Bollos, Roscos, Roscas and Hogazas. Pan de Alfacar is made from flour, natural sourdough fermented in the production area, water from the Fuente-Grande aquifer spring, baker’s yeast and ordinary salt.
