Villaharta: Trails, Springs and Whitewashed Facades

The Ruta de las Fuentes Agrias starts in Parque de Elías Cervelló in Villaharta. As a circular route, it is 8.38 kilometres long, easy, and takes around three hours.

Hiking

A second easy trail, the Route of the Sour Springs II, is 7.67 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It passes through the Dehesa Nueva of Espiel-Villaharta and along historic paths that were formerly used by spa guests to reach the San Rafael and La Lastra springs.

The Merendero de Las Serranas–Camino de las Monjas route is five kilometres long and has 184 metres of elevation gain. Sections of it follow the GR-48 and the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago, leading to a picnic area among holm oaks.

The Camino del Molinillo to the Arroyo de las Serranas is a 2.6-kilometre linear route of moderate difficulty. The stated walking time for the outward and return journey is around two to three hours; its described features include botanical, fauna-related and scenic interest.

The Camino de la Mimbre begins at the junction of Calle Camino del Cementerio and the road to Obejo in Villaharta. The different route lengths, walking times and difficulty levels can be compared as different planning criteria.

Nature

The Camino de Pedrique leads into a dehesa landscape with Mediterranean scrubland, holm oaks, rockroses, mastic shrubs and broom. At the same time, this path leads to the former Monasterio de Pedrique, which now houses the Casa Museo de Aurelio Teno.

Birds of prey can be observed hunting in this area; traces of wild boar or deer can also be found there.

The skies of Villaharta are part of the Reserva Starlight de Sierra Morena. This viewpoint offers panoramic views of Villaharta, its white facades and the Sierra del Enjambradero.

Culture

The Fuente de El Cordel is located in the municipality of Villaharta and is historically closely connected with the Cañada Real Soriana. The Fuente Malos Pasos is also located on the Cañada Real Soriana and is considered an important point on the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago; its iron-rich waters have a reddish colour.

The Fuente de El Cordel has a hexagonal pavilion in the regionalist style. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century from exposed brick and covered with a ribbed vault.

The final section of the Camino Mozárabe de Santiago through Villaharta leads via the Cuesta de la Matanza to the iron-rich springs of El Cordel and Malos Pasos.

The Fuente Boca del Infierno is a historic iron-rich spring that emerges from an old water gallery and is surrounded by scrubland. In the past, it supplied the old pavilions of the Balneario de Villaharta.

History

The old town of Villaharta lies on a hill and has steep streets and whitewashed facades.
