Discover Santaella: Castle, Festivals and Trails

Santaella makes its history visible through distinctive sites and vibrant traditions. The Castillo de Santaella is a medieval castle with a fortification wall and a tower of Muslim origin dating from the 12th century. The surviving parts include an angled entrance, two large cisterns, several sections of wall around the weapons courtyard and a square keep. Semana Santa is also part of the town’s distinctive annual rhythm: it begins with a Way of the Cross on Passion Saturday through Barrio Bajo, during which a crucifix is carried on people’s shoulders and muted drums can be heard. There is also a procession of the brotherhoods that have not yet taken part in a procession, without religious images and with only Nazarenos and marching bands.

Culture

The Museo Histórico Municipal de Santaella is located in the Casa de la Cultura, Calle Antonio Palma 27, 14546 Santaella (Córdoba). It comprises the archaeology and ethnography sections, complemented by palaeontology and mineralogy. At the archaeological site of Cerro del Castillo de Santaella, intensive settlement from the Late Bronze Age to the present day is documented, including medieval and modern phases.

Barrio Bajo is characterised by narrow streets and whitewashed houses. The Iglesia de la Asunción is a large Renaissance temple and is considered Santaella’s most representative monument. The Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz has been documented since the 16th century and, despite a more recent reconstruction, preserves its original single-nave floor plan. The Santuario Virgen del Valle is considered one of the finest Baroque buildings in Córdoba and Andalusia.

Nature and Trails

The Laguna del Donadío is listed in the official inventory of Andalusia’s wetlands under the code IHA613008, with an area of 13.01 hectares. The Ruta de la Laguna del Donadío is an interpretive trail along rural tracks between olive groves and wheat fields.

The Ruta de Las Fuentes is a 6 km linear trail in Santaella that can be used year-round on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. It leads to the Fuente de la Cañada Jardín and the Fuente del Pilón. The Fuente del Pilón supplied the settlement of Santaella in 1676. The various fountains in the municipality of Santaella are considered part of its historical, artistic and natural heritage, as well as attractive places that can promote rural tourism. Festivals and Flavours

The Feria de Ntra. Sra. del Valle begins in September and is the highlight of the town’s main festivals. Traditional dishes from Santaella include stew with white chickpeas, migas, salmorejo and white gazpacho. The surrounding area’s agriculture and its good wines are regarded as defining foundations of Santaella’s cuisine.
