Hinojosa Del Duque is home to the Church of San Juan Bautista, known as the Catedral de la Sierra. It is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and was declared a national historic-artistic monument on 5 February 1981. The Catedral de la Sierra was built in the Gothic style from the mid-15th century through the 16th century.

Culture and History

The church includes a sacristy with a Plateresque-style façade attributed to Hernán Ruiz the Elder. The Ermita Virgen del Castillo, dating from the 14th century, stands on the Plaza de la Catedral. The Pilar de los Llanos is a Renaissance monument from the 16th century and forms part of the livestock resting area on the Cordel of the Cañada Real Soriana; for centuries, it served as a watering place and as the centre of the San Agustín fairs.

The Museo Etnológico is housed in a mansion from the late 18th century that formerly belonged to a wealthy farming family from Hinojosa Del Duque. Through agricultural, livestock-farming, industrial and popular religious exhibition areas, it presents everyday life in Hinojosa Del Duque and its region. More than 2,000 items were donated or loaned by residents of Hinojosa Del Duque.

Holy Week in Hinojosa Del Duque has been recognised as a festival of national tourist interest in Andalusia. During its processions, hundreds of Nazarenos and bearers make their way through the town’s main streets together with trumpet and drum bands and local residents. The folk drama La Vaquera de la Finojosa was launched in 1998; the entire town of Hinojosa Del Duque was brought onto the stage for it.
