In the municipal area of El Carpio (Córdoba), Las Grúas and its surroundings are protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. Las Grúas is a 16th-century hydraulic complex attributed to Juan de Ávila. The facility raised water from the Guadalquivir to irrigate the surrounding farmland. The main structure includes a framework for three waterwheels; the complex also comprises a weir and a water distribution and storage system made up of channels and basins. In this way, protected heritage combines with a clearly understandable water technology and the use of the river for agriculture.

Tradition

In the Alto Guadalquivir, El Carpio and Bujalance share the tradition of the Voto a la Inmaculada Concepción, celebrated annually on 8 December; in El Carpio, it is also known as the Fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción. During the celebration, the Virgin is carried in a procession by women from the Hijas de María group. The ritual reaches its climax at Plaza del Triunfo: after the renewal of the vow, numerous children present a floral offering to the patron saint.
