Espera: Cultural Route, Castillo de Fatetar and Archaeological Traces

In Espera, the Ayuntamiento de Espera offers a Spanish-language guided tour of the Cultural Tourist Route, which must be reserved in advance.

The guided Cultural Tourist Route leads through Espera’s typical white streets up the slopes to the Castillo de Fatetar, offering panoramic views of the town and the comarca along the way.

Route

The Cultural Tourist Route can also be completed independently. QR codes can be scanned at each monument open to visitors. The meeting point for the route is the Oficina de Turismo on Calle Los Toros; parking is available there, including a reserved space for visitors with reduced mobility. The Cultural Tourist Route takes approximately two and a half hours.

Culture

The Museo Arqueológico in Espera displays finds from the two most important archaeological sites, as well as from other smaller sites in the municipality. On the ground floor of the Museo Arqueológico in Espera, prehistoric tools from the Palaeolithic to the Late Bronze Age are displayed, including worked and polished stone tools, hand mills, and bronze and ceramic implements.

On the first floor of the Museo Arqueológico, everyday life in the Roman cities of Carissa Aurelia and Esperilla is presented through architecture, trade, houses, occupations and clothing.

History

The Casa Cilla o Molino de los Diezmos in Espera is a Baroque building from the first quarter of the 18th century, built specifically to store the abolished tithes in the form of payments in kind. It is the only cilla oil mill in the province of Cádiz; it retains its complete functional structure and continued to operate as an oil mill with modern machinery.

The Ibero-Roman city of Carissa Aurelia lies 7 kilometres from Espera and preserves a necropolis with various forms of burial, including graves, mausoleums and rock-cut hypogea.

Geographical Setting
