El Santiscal – Nature, Water and Roman Villa

El Santiscal preserves a rural Roman villa from the imperial period within its present-day urbanisation. The well-known area of the Villa Romana de El Santiscal includes a peristyle, a pool, water pipes and several mosaics, including a depiction of Venus and Adonis. The structure and floor coverings indicate that the villa was used throughout the Roman imperial period until the 6th century.

Nature

The Cola del Embalse de Arcos nature area borders the urbanisation. It lies at the end of the Guadalete reservoir and is a reed bed covering approximately 100 hectares. In addition to the beach, Club Náutico de Arcos offers stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, boat trips and water skiing.

Hiking

The El Santiscal hiking trail begins at Avenida del Príncipe de España in the El Santiscal urbanisation in Arcos de la Frontera. From Arcos, it can be reached via the A-372 towards El Bosque and a signposted turn-off to the urbanisation. The starting point, the signposted turn-off and the stated road direction provide different reference points when incorporating the route into your planning. The trail is located in the backwater of the Arcos reservoir on the Guadalete River; there is a year-round body of water there, as well as marsh vegetation consisting of reeds, cattails and common reed.
