Discover El Bujeo: Bird Migration, Hiking Trails and Views

El Bujeo is located within the municipality of Tarifa, in a large eucalyptus plantation. Holm oaks and cork oaks spread across the surrounding areas.

Nature and Views

The El Bujeo recreational area has picnic tables, barbecue facilities, parking areas and a spring supplying untreated water of excellent quality.

From the N-340, the recreational area can be reached via a forest track that branches off shortly after the Algeciras youth hostel when travelling from Algeciras towards Tarifa.

The El Cabrito Observatory is located at an elevated position in the Sierra del Cabrito and offers views across the Strait of Gibraltar to Jebel Musa in Morocco. It is used to observe the seasonal migration of soaring birds across the Strait of Gibraltar.

The higher sections of the Río Guadalmesí trail offer views of the Strait of Gibraltar and opportunities to observe migratory and resident birds.

Hiking

The Puerto del Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro trail begins at the turn-off at kilometre 95 of the N-340 between El Pelayo and El Cuartón; the El Bujeo recreational area is located there. It passes streams lined with Algerian oaks, cork oaks, rhododendrons and ferns. The one-way route is 22.004 kilometres long, moderately difficult and takes three hours to walk.

The El Cabrito–Puerto del Bujeo trail is a 9-kilometre linear hiking route with a walking time of four hours and a low level of difficulty; it begins at the El Bujeo recreational area. It passes through typical Mediterranean scrubland with young cork oaks and, along the streams, more luxuriant vegetation.

The Río Guadalmesí trail is a circular route of approximately 7 kilometres, of moderate difficulty, with a walking time of around three hours. The starting point and destination are at the turn-off to the El Bujeo recreational area at kilometre 95 of the N-340. The route passes through gorges with typical rainforest flora and offers views of the sea and the Guadalmesí Tower. The trail is currently temporarily closed.

Cycling and Climbing

The Montes de Tarifa cycling route is linear, moderately difficult, approximately 27.340 kilometres long and takes around three hours. It can also be started at the El Bujeo recreational area at kilometre 95 of the N-340. The route offers views of the Sierra del Bujeo and the African coast; it leads to the Sierra del Bujeo, on whose southern slope the Río Guadalmesí is located.

The El Bujeo–Hoyo Don Pedro cycling route has been closed to public use since 29 December 2025 due to landslides caused by heavy rainfall.

The El Bujeo climbing area between Algeciras and Tarifa has around forty routes, ranging from short, easy routes to overhangs for aid climbing, as well as opportunities for bouldering.
