Villaricos: Coast, History and Holiday Apartments in Andalusia
Villaricos: The Castillo de Villaricos now serves as a viewpoint with information panels and digital offerings.
History
The Enclave Arqueológico de Villaricos in Cuevas del Almanzora (Almería) preserves the remains of the ancient Phoenician city of Baria. The area open to visitors mainly comprises the necropolis. Monumental hypogeum tombs from the Phoenician-Punic period are located there.
The interpretation centre at the Castillo de Villaricos explains the development of coastal fortifications. The restored Castillo de Villaricos has been transformed into a museum area with updated content. This museum area includes interactive reconstructions and immersive visual presentations.
For you, the historical topics can be distinguished according to their access: archaeological remains, coastal fortifications, museum interpretation and mining history stand alongside one another as separate focal points.
Mining Heritage
The Las Herrerías–Villaricos mine railway operated from April 1897 to 1958. It transported ore from the mining areas to the loading point on Villaricos beach.
The Fundiciones de la Costa de Villaricos comprise the remains of former coastal smelting works with ore-washing facilities. These Fundiciones are connected with the smelting of ore extracted from the Sierra Almagrera.
The clearly defined period of operation of the railway line and the former smelting works open up different historical perspectives that can be considered separately when planning your visit.
Coast and Coves
Playa de Villaricos beach stretches to the mouth of the Almanzora River and includes Cala de la Esperanza, Cala Verde and Villaricos (Cala de la Luz Eléctrica).
Cala Verde is a small in-town beach with dark pebbles and calm water. Natural rocks and natural reefs protect this beach.
Cala de las Conchas is a natural refuge with crystal-clear water and fine sand. The striking cliffs of the Sierra Almagrera surround the cove.
You can compare the different beach characteristics when planning your visit. The substrate, water and surroundings provide different points of reference for selecting your preferred coastal focus.
Port and Water
The Puerto de Villaricos harbour has 70 berths for boats measuring between 5 and 12 metres in length. Puerto de Villaricos also offers boat hire.
Cala Verde offers opportunities for snorkelling. Cala de las Conchas offers opportunities for snorkelling and diving.
For water activities, snorkelling, diving and boat hire are presented as different types of activity. The stated range of possible boat lengths also provides a separate point of comparison for maritime planning.
When comparing holiday apartments in Villaricos, check the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages. This information allows for an objective comparison; your choice can be aligned with your own priorities between history, beaches and water activities.
