Discover Fiñana: Alcazaba, Mosque and Sendero 21

Fiñana combines important evidence of its history with trails through varied landscapes. The Alcazaba of Fiñana was built before the 10th century, while the Iglesia de la Anunciación de Fiñana was built in 1570. Its interior is Mudéjar, while the façade is designed in the Renaissance style.

Culture and History

The Alcazaba reached its peak between the 13th and 15th centuries and was occupied by the Christians in 1489. Only the remains of three towers and surrounding walls have survived. The district that developed from the Alcazaba of Fiñana preserves traces of the former Muslim suburb along the course of its streets.

The Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno preserves an almost completely intact Almohad mosque from the 13th century; only the minaret and courtyard are missing. The surviving features include the prayer hall with its qibla, as well as part of the decoration on the portal of the mihrab. The mosque was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1984.

The Iglesia de la Anunciación houses a museum in its sacristy with religious depictions and scores of Gregorian chants. In Fiñana, the Museo de la Recreación de los Reyes Católicos is part of the visitor offering of the Centro de Interpretación del Medio Natural, known as CIMENA for short. Trails and Hiking

Sendero 21 begins at the Albergue de Ubeire, located approximately 13 km from Fiñana. The trail follows the Arroyo del Ubeire through a riparian forest of willows, alders, walnut trees and some chestnut trees. It leads to the Cascada del Goterón at the confluence of the Ubeire, Estepar and Rosal streams. Using traditional pack-animal paths, Sendero 21 also provides access to the grain mills located on the Río Nacimiento, which feature overshot water wheels.

There are two access routes to Sendero Sulayr from Fiñana: one by vehicle and one on foot. The vehicle access road leads to the course of Sendero Sulayr on the Piedra Negra–El Toril section. The pedestrian access route leads from the Albergue de Ubeire via the perimeter track to Loma del Rosal. The Albergue-Refugio El Ubeire is located approximately 14 km from Fiñana, can be reached via a forest track and is managed by the Fiñana Town Council. Festivals

The Corpus Christi celebration in Fiñana is considered one of the town’s most important festive rituals. During the Corpus Christi procession, streets and façades along the procession route are decorated with blankets hanging from balconies. The residents of Fiñana set up their Corpus Christi altars at the doors of their homes.
