Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa María was built between 1530 and 1550; after a flood at the end of the 19th century, it was rebuilt as a single-nave church with a wooden ceiling and two towers, one of them for the Chapel of San Blas.

The Castillo de Líjar stands at the highest point of the town, a stone, castle-shaped building from the 21st century. It houses a tourist information office and an exhibition room.

The Atalaya de Líjar is the main tower of the municipality of Líjar in Almería. It is made of yellow slate from the valley, has a square body 7 metres high and features an 11-metre-high cylindrical tower at its western tip, which can be climbed up to the battlements.

The “war” declared between Líjar and France ended with a peace treaty signed on 30 October 1983.

Townscape and Views

The viewpoint at the Castillo de Líjar offers panoramic views of the town, its Vega and part of the surrounding Sierra. The view thus combines the town centre, the agriculturally shaped Vega and the wider mountain landscape at a single viewpoint.

In the Barrio del Castillo, Líjar preserves a townscape shaped by its Arab heritage, with narrow streets, lanes, single-storey whitewashed houses and corrales.
