Cantoria – Festivals, History and Holiday Apartments

San Antón Las Carretillas takes place annually in Cantoria, a local festival with a religious, cultural and traditional character. During the procession and in designated areas, manually ignited pyrotechnic devices producing a continuous stream of sparks and no final bang are used.

Culture

The Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church was inaugurated in 1870 and restored twice. It is dedicated to the municipality’s patron saint and is considered an important sight. The church houses several paintings originating from the Museo del Prado, including The Vesting of Saint Ildefonsus by Antonio Lanchares, a painting of Saint Teresa from the Seville School, and a painting of Saint John the Baptist.

The Saavedra Theatre was built in 1926 on the initiative of Vicente Giménez Saavedra. It was initially used as a theatre and later converted into a cinema. It was recently restored on the initiative of Cantoria Town Hall.

The Ermita in Cantoria is a small Baroque temple from the 18th century dedicated to Saint Ildefonsus. It stands on a hill overlooking Cantoria and can be reached via the steep Calle de La Ermita. Cantoria also has a long craft tradition involving the use of hammer and chisel. Opposite present-day Cantoria, on a hill on the right bank of the Almanzora, lie the remains of Muslim Cantoria.

Routes

The Vías Verdes del Almanzora follow the route of the former railway line through Cantoria and form part of a route through several municipalities. The long-distance route through the Almanzora Basin also passes through Cantoria and is recommended for walking; individual sections can be covered by car or bicycle.

Geographical Setting

The Puente de Hierro was built over the Almanzora in the 1920s, where the river runs through Cantoria. At both ends, it has two viewing platforms with a square ground plan and views over the Vega.

Near Cantoria is the Casa del Marqués de la Romana palace. The surrounding area also includes the Mirador de la Virgen viewpoint, the Museo Casa Ibáñez museum, the ancient Mina romana de lapis specularis del Espejuelo site, and the Mortero más grande del mundo monument.

In the wider regional area around Cantoria are the Peñón de la Chaparra mountain, the Sierra de las Estancias and the Mirador de Las Cruces viewpoint.
