After flowing through a narrow valley, the Lobnica stream reaches the plain near Smolnik. The hidden Lobnica and Verna Canyon lies in Smolnik’s deep gorge. Thus, Smolnik brings together different landscape forms within a compact narrative setting: a stream, a narrow valley, the plain and a deep gorge.

Nature

A 19-hectare, untouched primeval forest of the Pohorje extends along the Lobnica stream. The trail Pot ob potoku Lobnica leads to the Veliki Šumik waterfall. The Lobniška riža was a 17-kilometre-long log flume in the Lobnica Valley, used to transport timber downstream. It was built along the Lobnica in 1874 over a length of 5,728 metres.

The names of the stream, trail, waterfall and log flume each preserve a distinct aspect of the landscape. The hidden Lobnica and Verna Canyon lies in Smolnik’s deep gorge, while the untouched primeval forest of the Pohorje occupies a clearly defined area of 19 hectares along the Lobnica.

Culture

The railway viaduct at Smolnik is located in the western part of Ruše, in Smolnik. It is one of three surviving structures of its kind along the Koroška Railway line and is classified as a technical monument. Its location, connection to the railway line and monument status therefore together form the basis of its described significance.

The Church of St Mary stands high on the slope in the hamlet of Hlebovo in Smolnik. It was built between 1859 and 1861. The church interior has a central, domed-vaulted space surrounded by pilasters. Its location, construction period and spatial form are the principal named features of this religious building.

The remains of the so-called Turkish Wall in Smolnik are made of rubble stone. During the Turkish invasions, local residents sought shelter behind the remains of the Turkish Wall. The Dravska kljuža, a defensive wall, is already mentioned in historical sources in 1147.

Getting around

The Pohorje cycling route (Belvi - Areh - Šumik) reaches Smolnik and then continues to Ruše. Its route designation therefore names both the starting points or sections of the route and the continuation to Ruše, without separating the settlement from the route.

Posestvo Šumik rents out the main house and its associated grounds to groups of up to 15 guests. The offer is thus expressly linked to the main house, its associated grounds and a maximum group size of 15 guests.

Stara ribogojnica Smolnik serves roasted and fried trout. A sketch comedy evening entitled Hanzekov večer was announced for 29 November 2025 at the Gasilskem domu Smolnik.
