Strunjan reveals its distinctive character where a dramatic coastline, lagoon and salt pans come together: the Strunjan Cliff rises 80 metres above Moon Bay and is the highest cliff on the Adriatic coast. Stjuža is Slovenia’s only marine lagoon, while the Strunjan salt pans are among the northernmost surviving salt pans in the Mediterranean region. Thus, different types of landscape come together within a small area, each with its own character.
Nature and coast
Stjuža is important for waterbirds: they find food, shelter and nesting opportunities there. The shallow, sandy seabed of Moon Bay supports underwater meadows of seagrass. The descent to Moon Bay takes a little more than 20 minutes. Swimming is possible in the Strunjan Nature Reserve during the summer months.
Stjuža combines the functions of a lagoon environment with living conditions for waterbirds: food, shelter and nesting opportunities are found there in the same place. Moon Bay, by contrast, has a different natural structure, with its shallow, sandy seabed and underwater meadows of seagrass. The cliff, bay and lagoon therefore represent clearly distinguishable landscape areas within Strunjan.
Paths and exploration
The footpaths in Strunjan’s two nature reserves are reserved exclusively for pedestrians: at the cliff and at the salt pans with the lagoon. The circular trail with educational stations begins and ends at the Strunjan Landscape Park Centre near the Strunjan salt pans. Guided tours of Strunjan Landscape Park are available to individuals or groups by prior reservation.
Cyclists also have a designated form of travel in Strunjan Landscape Park: they can use the network of roads and paths within the settlements. Footpaths, the circular trail, guided tours and cycling are therefore each associated with a clearly defined spatial context.
The paths at the cliff and at the salt pans with the lagoon are expressly intended for pedestrian use. The circular trail has a designated starting and ending point at the Landscape Park Centre, while guided tours are open to both individuals and groups, provided they are reserved in advance. Cycling, by contrast, is restricted to the road network and paths within the settlements.
Culture and landscape
The Strunjan salt pans are protected as a natural and cultural monument within Strunjan Landscape Park. Their traditional sea-salt production is based on natural crystallisation: water evaporates under the influence of the sun and wind. This form of production has been practised there for more than 700 years.
Strunjan’s cultural landscape includes terraces separated from one another by dry-stone walls. A double-sided avenue of 110 pine trees was protected in 2004 and declared a natural monument. In the same cultural landscape, farmers began growing artichokes several years ago.
Several of the elements described come together in the salt-making process: water evaporates through the effects of the sun and wind, after which sea salt forms through natural crystallisation. The traditional process is linked to the protected salt pans as a natural and cultural monument. The terraces with their dry-stone walls, the protected avenue of pine trees and the later cultivation of artichokes also form part of this cultural landscape, without serving the same function.
