Holiday apartment in Sečovlje: Salt, Nature and History
Sečovlje is closely associated with the Sečovlje Salt Pans. Salt is still harvested there by hand using a method that is several centuries old. This traditional way of working is therefore not merely a historical reference but is still practised in the salt pans and shapes the character of the area.
Nature
The Sečovlje Salt Pans are located at the mouth of the Dragonja River. Salt-loving plants, known as halophytes, grow in the saline environment. The term refers to plants adapted to such conditions. So far, 296 species have been recorded in the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park. The landscape is therefore characterised by the interplay of the river mouth, salt fields and a distinctive plant life.
History
The ruins of former salt workers’ houses can be found in Fontanigge; they are associated with medieval salt production. The Museum of Salt-Making is located in the abandoned Fontanigge area on the Giassi Channel. The museum comprises four restored salt-pan houses. Exhibits in the museum illustrate the history of the salt pans as well as the way of life and work of the salt workers. Thus, the preserved traces of former work and residential buildings stand alongside the museum presentation of the history associated with them in the same place.
Experiences
A guided tour through the Lera salt pans includes an approximately 2 km walking route from the Lera entrance to the visitor centre and back. The route is therefore described as a return journey between the entrance and the visitor centre. A guided tour through the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park introduces the flora, fauna, cultural heritage and salt-production process. The visitor centre in Lera contains a large model of the salt pans as well as information about salt and the salt pans. The Sečovlje Salt Pans also offer a three-hour birdwatching programme. The activities therefore focus on different aspects: the tour presents several facets of the park, while birdwatching has its own time frame.
Access
The Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park has two land access points. There is a car park at the entrance to Lera. Lera is therefore one of the two named land access points to the park and, at the same time, the access point where the car park is explicitly indicated.
Wellness
In the northern part of the Sečovlje Salt Pans Landscape Park, Thalasso Spa Lepa Vida offers traditional outdoor thalassotherapy treatments using natural products from the salt pans. These include salt-pan mud packs, brine baths with Aqua Madre, salt scrubs and hand massages. The treatments listed therefore include baths and packs as well as scrubs and massages; the salt pans are named as the source of the products.
