Piran combines Baroque architecture, maritime collections, the underwater world of the Northern Adriatic and paths to distinctive capes. Between the historic center, lighthouse and surrounding region, the town presents a varied picture in which culture and landscape stand closely side by side.

Culture

The Church of St. George in Piran is a Baroque church on a hill above the town. It has a bell tower and a baptistery. The Župnijski muzej sv. Jurija Museum includes a treasury, a lapidarium and an archaeological excavation site. Both places represent different approaches to Piran's history and cultural heritage.

Maritime themes characterize other sightseeing destinations. The Sergej Mašera Maritime Museum presents maritime archaeology, fishing ethnology, ship models, navigational instruments, naval uniforms and maps. The Maritime Museum is also located in the immediate vicinity of Piran. The St. George Church is likewise located nearby.

The Lighthouse of Piran stands at the end of Punta Cape. It dates from the 19th century, is open to visitors and is suitable for walks and watching sunsets.

Nature

The paths along the sea are also part of Piran's character. A well-maintained hiking trail leads from Piran to Cape Madona. The trail provides its own access to the landscape, while the Lighthouse of Piran marks another place for a walk and for watching the sunset.

The Piran Aquarium presents the underwater world of the Northern Adriatic. This underwater world is a habitat for around 140 different species of organisms. The aquarium welcomes both individual visitors and groups.

Getting there

Piran's historic center is largely closed to traffic. Visitors are advised to leave their car in the Amfora parking garage outside the city center.

Geographical location

Several destinations with different geographical connections are located around Piran. The Rt Savudrija Cape and Cape Lako are located in the vicinity of Piran. Both capes add further distinctive points to the immediate landscape surrounding the town.

The wider regional surroundings of Piran include Castello di Muggia, the Museo d'arte Moderna Ugo Cara', the Vedetta d'Italia viewpoint and Mount Sveti Mihel. The view therefore extends beyond the direct destinations in and near Piran to cultural, scenic and panoramic locations in the wider regional area.
