Ljutomer: Old Town, Horse Racing and Wine
Ljutomer’s old town lies below the Kamenščak hill. The town consists of four squares: Glavni trg, Stari trg, Miklošičev trg and Trg Jakoba Babiča. Glavni trg is home to a statue of the Immaculate Mary on a tall column dating from 1729.
Culture and History
The Church of St John the Baptist in Ljutomer dates from the late 17th century. Its presbytery and bell tower are Gothic, while the church also has a Baroque three-nave floor plan.
The Puh Museum has a collection dedicated to Janez Puh. He is credited with 19 patents in the field of road vehicle technology and six patents for typewriters. A klopotec is a wooden windmill mounted on a tall post in a vineyard and intended to drive away birds with its sounds. For cultural interests, architectural history, technology and regional traditions can be considered as distinct areas of focus.
Horse Racing
The Ljutomerski Kasač Museum and the trotting track are part of the Kasaški klub Ljutomer complex, which includes stables and a racecourse. The Ljutomerski Kasač Museum and the trotting track present the history of horseshoeing and document the first horse races in Slovenia, which took place in the area around Ljutomer in 1874. Kasaški klub Ljutomer organises eight trotting races every year.
Horse racing and the history of technology offer two different ways of experiencing the town: one focuses on races, while the other focuses on inventions and their development. You can consider these topics separately or alongside one another as cultural areas of focus when planning your trip.
Wine Road and Cuisine
The Jeruzalem Wine Road can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus. All year round, tourist farms with accommodation, wine taverns, winemakers, producers of unique items and other providers welcome visitors along the Jeruzalem Wine Road. The cuisine of the Prlekija region is considered an important tourist attraction; inns and tourist farms offer their dishes as house specialities.
When planning your trip, you can match the four ways of travelling along the wine road to your own daily rhythm. Those who prefer different modes of transport can incorporate the Jeruzalem Wine Road into their plans as a walk, bike tour, car journey or bus trip.
Festival
The Grossmann Festival programme includes wine tastings, exhibitions, concerts and workshops. The 21st “Grossmannov festival fantastičnega filma in vina” will take place from 8 to 12 July 2026 in Ljutomer, Slovenia, and celebrates fantastic film, cult culture and recognised wines from the Prlekija region.
For your planning, you can arrange the event formats according to your interests and schedule your festival visit within the summer period mentioned. If different interests come together, culture, horse racing, wine and film can be considered as separate areas of focus.
For a holiday apartment in Ljutomer, you can first compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies on the respective offer pages. The specific conditions can be considered alongside your personal interests in culture, wine, horse racing or the festival.
