The first Slovenian trotting races took place in the area around Ljutomer in 1874; the region is considered the birthplace of Slovenian horse breeding. Sunday trotting races at the Ljutomer Hippodrome are among the important local traditions.

Culture and History
In General Maister Park stands the only monument in Slovenia depicting Rudolf Maister as a cultural figure, poet, and bibliophile. The Ljutomer Museum presents Karol Grossmann, who filmed the first Slovenian movie, “Odhod od maše,” in Ljutomer in 1905; Ljutomer is also regarded as the place where the first Slovenian film recording was made.
The Ljutomer Museum has three permanent collections that convey the history of the town and its surroundings through stories, objects, and memories. Ljutomer was the site of the first Slovenian Tabor, where demands were made for basic national rights, the official use of the Slovenian language, and a united Slovenia.
The Pristava Winegrowing and Farm Museum presents more than 300 years of the Pavličič family’s farming and winegrowing life. Its expanded program includes, upon prior reservation, a farm-style snack with wine from the family’s own cellar. Lončarstvo Žuman has passed down its pottery craft through five generations since 1874 and maintains a small museum with products made by five generations of the family.
The Church of St. Jerome and the State Archives in Međimurje are also located in the area surrounding the municipality of Ljutomer.
Trails and Landscape
A section of the Slovenian-Croatian branch of the Prekmursko-Štajerska Way of St. James runs through the municipality of Ljutomer. The Vinska kolesarska pot is 16.3 kilometers long and begins at Glavni trg.
The Jeruzalemska vinska pot is a 7.9-kilometer hiking trail through terraced vineyards. The Vardova pot is a 15.5-kilometer circular cycling route that runs through Ljutomer, past the former Vardov grad, to the Ljutomer ponds and back to Ljutomer. The Grossmannova pohodna pot is an 8.1-kilometer circular trail through Mala Nedelja, passing by the Grossmannova domačija.
The Pot razgledov features a natural spring and a vineyard well near Rinčetova graba. The area surrounding the municipality of Ljutomer contains several landscape features: Mađerkin Breg as a peak, and Pod Kotom- jug, Nova Tabla, and Popava1 as natural arches. A landscape park covering 1,345 hectares includes the Jeruzalem Hills as well as six ponds in the village of Podgradje near Ljutomer.
