Cerkvenjak combines sacred art, wine tradition and routes through the rolling hills. Between historic buildings, regional collections and various routes, there are numerous opportunities to discover the town in a varied way.

Culture

On the hill of Cerkvenjak stands the Late Gothic parish church of Saint Anthony the Hermit. The parish church of Saint Anthony in Cerkvenjak is a Late Gothic church dating from 1516 to 1546. The Church of Saint Anthony the Hermit was first mentioned in 1299 and contains Gothic frescoes dating from 1395 to 1400.

The Ovtarja sculpture also contributes to the cultural character of the town centre. It depicts a traditional guardian of the vineyards. Johanezova trta also stands in the centre; it was planted on 24 April 2004. It is a cutting from the more than 400-year-old Stara trta in Maribor, which is considered the oldest vine in the world.

Another stop is the museum collection of Feliks Rajh, which is exhibited at the Tušakova domačija in Cerkvenjak. The collection comprises 800 different exhibits and connects the town with an extensive culture of rural and regional remembrance.

Routes and Excursions

The Klopotčeva educational and walking route leads through the rolling hills of Cerkvenjak and the valley of the Andrenski potok. Along its course, it provides information about various ecosystems, characteristic plant and animal species, water, and the cultural and natural heritage of the landscape.

The Pot med jezeri consists of three informative hiking trails suitable for all generations. The section of these trails through Cerkvenjak connects an archaeological site with an ethnographic collection. On this route, both the landscape and tangible evidence of the region's past are therefore central.

Cerkvenjak can also be explored by bicycle on a designated circuit. The cycling circuit along the municipal boundaries of Cerkvenjak begins in the centre of Cerkvenjak. It is approximately 25 kilometres long and takes about three hours by bicycle.

The Pomurska Mountain Trail leads from Negova via the Archaeological Park in Brengova to the centre of Cerkvenjak. The PPP-15 control stamp is located there. The Cerkvenjak Tourist Information Centre also organises excursions with a local tour guide.

Landscape

From the tower of the fire station in Cerkvenjak, the view extends over the Pomurska ravnina and the eastern foothills of the Karawanks in Slovenia and Austria. Pohorje, Boč, Donačka gora and Ivančica in Croatia can also be seen. In clear weather, the view reaches as far as Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

The VTC 13 wine tourism road passes through twelve municipalities, including Cerkvenjak. In Cerkvenjak and its surroundings, it takes visitors to local winegrowers and wine bars, inns, tourist and excursion farms, as well as other providers such as organic farms, beekeepers and fruit growers.

The Cerkvenjaška Wine Queen promotes the wines and winegrowers from the Cerkvenjak area. The title is awarded for two years at the central Martinovanje celebration. The regional cuisine at Domačija Firbas includes traditional dishes such as Tünka meat, Lük, sour soup, pork belly and Prlekija layer cake.
