Raka Castle is considered one of the oldest medieval castles in Slovenia. You can visit 34 rooms in the castle; all rooms are furnished with authentic interiors from the 17th to the 19th century. The castle is open year-round to larger groups that register in advance, and tours are offered in Slovenian, Croatian and English.

Culture and history

The late Baroque St. Lawrence Church in Raka was built between 1799 and 1804 on the site of an older predecessor building. It has two bell towers and a richly articulated façade. The church contains a valuable Baroque organ case that was transferred from the former monastery church in Kostanjevica Na Krki. The local tourism association can organize guided tours of Raka and its sights.

Wine and crafts

The Raka Wine Trail focuses on tasting local specialties from Raka and Cviček wine. It runs through the vineyards in the hills around Raka and begins at the Cvičkov hram, which is considered the first embassy of Cviček. In Jelenk, the trail includes a visit to the Žibert wine cellar. At the Cvičkov hram Vineyard Cottage in Raka, visitors are served Cviček with bacon and the indigenous raška č’bula onion variety.

Local tradition also includes the Kržan Farm, which has a long-standing tradition of producing ceramic objects. At the Kržan Farm, visitors can work on the potter’s wheel themselves.

Landscape and trails

The Cavsar viewpoint offers sweeping views over the surroundings of Raka. The Cavsar Trail provides walkers with a route between historic memorials. The Ladybird Learning Trail passes a pillory beside the path to Raka Castle and leads to a chapel on Vinji vrh. From there, you can see across the entire Krško Basin, the Gorjanci Hills and the Kočevski rog mountain range. The Ladybird Learning Trail begins and ends at the square by St. Lawrence Church.
