Rajhenburg Castle tells its story on several levels. It was originally built between 1131 and 1147 under Archbishop Conrad the 1st; in 1881, Trappist monks bought the castle and converted it into a monastery. The permanent exhibition “Knights of Rajhenburg” tells the 429-year family history of the leaseholders of the Archbishops of Salzburg. Another permanent exhibition is entitled “Trappists in Rajhenburg”. Rajhenburg Castle also features permanent and temporary exhibitions on the history of the castle, the town, and the wider surrounding area. The complex includes an original Romanesque chapel from the 12th century and a Gothic chapel added later in the 16th century.

Culture

During guided tours of Rajhenburg Castle, participants learn about the site and its development, walk through the entire castle, and visit permanent and temporary exhibitions. Visitors can also attend events such as concerts, theatre performances, and lectures. Rajhenburg Castle is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. This means that tours, exhibitions, and events can be experienced in different forms within the same historic complex.

Nature and Activities

Rajhenburg Castle stands on a 60-metre-high rocky outcrop overlooking the confluence of the Brestanica stream and the Sava. The Mačkovci fishponds lie about 2 kilometres northeast of Brestanica. The meadows and forests around the fishponds offer opportunities for walking, fishing, and day trips. The Brestanica cycle path runs through the hills and valleys around Brestanica. The area's landscapes therefore extend from the rocky outcrop at the confluence to the ponds and the paths through the surrounding hill country.

History and Spirituality

The basilica in Brestanica was built between 1908 and 1914 as a three-nave church in the Neo-Romanesque style. It can be visited daily, except when the priest is absent. To ensure that it is open, prior registration at the telephone number provided is recommended.

Visiting and Leisure

The swimming pool complex includes an Olympic-size pool and a children's pool, with a combined water surface of approximately 1,350 m². A wine gallery is located in the cellar of Rajhenburg Castle.
