Holiday apartment in Krško – Culture, Energy and Cycling Routes

Krško lies on both banks of Slovenia’s longest river. Krško’s old town can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Culture

The Krško City Museum is housed in a complex consisting of three buildings. It includes the oldest surviving buildings in Krško, which were first constructed in the late 15th century. The museum features permanent exhibitions about Janez Vajkard Valvasor, Jospina Hočevar and Vladimir Štoviček. Specialist lectures, creative workshops and other events are also held there regularly.

Another testimony to the area’s history is preserved in the Mencinger House, where visitors can see a fruit-drying room established and preserved towards the end of the 19th century, highlighting the importance of fruit growing to Krško and its surrounding area. The Hočevar family mausoleum was built as a family tomb by Josipina Hočevar after her husband’s death in 1886. It is a cultural monument of mature Gothic Revival; guided tours are offered on the second Tuesday of every month at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Capuchin Library in Krško is a museum library and a cultural monument. Its contents are accessible to the public under special conditions, and visits are possible by prior arrangement. The oldest book in the library is a Latin dictionary by Calepin from 1502. In the Valvasor Library, visitors can also discover the first Slovenian Bible translation, which is almost half a millennium old.

The Krško Gallery is housed in the former Church of the Holy Spirit and presents temporary art exhibitions created specifically for this exhibition venue.

Energy

Svet energije is an interactive multimedia visitor centre about energy and the energy industry. An interactive exhibition is complemented by an experimentation room where visitors can independently explore experiments involving electricity, electrical engineering, magnetism, electrostatics and electromagnetism.

The Krško Nuclear Power Plant welcomes registered and organised visitors. The visiting day must be arranged in advance with the public relations department. Visits include a presentation on the plant’s operation and a guided tour by bus or on foot.

Cycling and Hiking

The Municipality of Krško operates the free “Krčan” bicycle rental system at 11 bicycle stations in various locations throughout the municipality. The municipality has approximately 34 kilometres of cycling infrastructure, enabling cyclists to participate in traffic more safely.

The “Na Grmado” cycling tour starts and ends at the Krško PZA, beginning in Krško, ascending towards Sremič and continuing to Grmada.

The Krško destination offers technically easy, well-maintained and marked hiking trails with elevation differences of up to 200 metres, which are particularly suitable for families with children. The local offering also includes moderately difficult hikes in the low mountain range, including circular routes, multi-day long-distance hiking trails and one-day tours.

Culinary Delights and Surroundings

Krško’s tourist gastronomy offering highlights homemade cured meats, autochthonous wines and Krško chocolate. In the wider Krško area, rowing is available on the slow-flowing Krka using rented kayaks, canoes or larger boats.

Krško can be reached via the motorway connection between Ljubljana and Zagreb.
