Stiška Vas reaches far back into history: the Gradišče settlement near Stiška Vas dates from the 5th millennium BC and is considered the oldest known settlement in the area of today’s Municipality of Cerklje. Above the Reka Valley, Gradišče is protected by artificial defensive embankments and steep terrain. A hoard of 49 Roman coins was hidden in a cave below Stiška Vas.

Culture and History

The name of the village also points to its religious history: Stiška Vas is named after the Holy Cross, not after Stična Monastery. The present-day Church of the Holy Cross was built on a nearby hill in 1751 after the older church had been demolished. Inside, the painting on the main altar is by Jožef Goetzl. A Pietà is located in a niche on the right-hand side. The Church of the Holy Cross was formerly a much-visited pilgrimage destination during Lent.
