Holiday apartment in Naklo: cycling routes, culture and nature

Naklo combines a marked cycling landscape with special nature observations and a multifaceted local history. The basic cycling loop leads via Naklo, Strahinj, Duplje and Podbrezje back to Naklo, is 16 kilometres long and takes about 60 minutes without stops. It starts in front of Naklo Primary School.

Cycling

The Kranj–Polica–Okroglo–Duplje cycling route, which is 12 kilometres long, and the Naklo–Udin Boršt–Naklo cycling route, which is 12.5 kilometres long, are also marked within the Municipality of Naklo. Together, these two routes have three bicycle rest areas. They are equipped with four tables, eight benches, two information boards, a horse-tethering facility with a watering trough and two double waste bins.

Naklo lies at an altitude of 407 metres in a dry valley through which the Tržiška Bistrica once flowed. Another route leads as the Na Okroglo excursion from Naklo Primary School via Dobrava to the village of Okroglo. The excursion is 2 to 3 kilometres long and takes about 20 minutes, plus an additional hour for sightseeing. Below Okroglo, groundwater emerges from a conglomerate wall and deposits lime on moss.

Nature

In the Municipality of Naklo, the Kriva jelka forest reserve has an information board at its entrance and a short marked visitor trail. The Finfranje Festival takes place beneath Kriva jelka near Spodnje Duplje on the second Sunday in May. This site was formerly associated with gatherings of the Rokovnjači.

Two ponds in Bistrica pri Naklem also offer year-round fishing experiences for experienced and recreational anglers as well as families. The Naklo Biotechnical Centre offers guided tours of the estate. These last between 45 minutes and three hours and are accompanied by professors as well as trained pupils and students.

Culture and history

The Church of Saint Peter in Naklo dates from 1735 and is considered the area's most important cultural landmark. Naklo's history is also connected with former transport links: Naklo was once a station for traders, teamsters and travellers. As a result, crafts such as blacksmithing and wheelwrighting developed there, as did the hospitality industry.

The Slovene Ethnographic Museum assigns Naklo pri Kranju to the period from 1928 to 1947. In Duplje there is a more than 200-year-old farm with an outbuilding and a shoemaker's workshop. Today, as an ethnographic museum and cultural heritage monument, it comprehensively presents life in Duplje since the 18th century.

The Church of Mary Magdalene stands on a hill below the manor house and is surrounded by a low wall. In Naklo, the Pavlinova Gallery organises exhibitions and presentations by local residents. The Voglarjeva circular route begins at the old railway station in Naklo, beside a historic steam locomotive.

The Poličarjeva Farm is home to an open-air museum of millstones. It was established in memory of the millstone-making family and the valued craft.

Local traditions

In the immediate surroundings of Naklo, agricultural traditions involving buckwheat, buckwheat žganci and sauerkraut continue to this day. In Naklo, these foods are associated with an agricultural culinary tradition that has survived to the present day.
