Nature and Alpine landscape

At the upper end of the alpine valley of the Kamniška Bistrica, Dom v Kamniški Bistrici stands directly above a small lake fed by several karst springs. From there, visitors can enjoy views of the Kamnik Alps surrounding the valley. The Kamniška Bistrica River is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Slovenia. At its source, visitors can drink crystal-clear water; in winter, the surrounding snow-covered peaks are visible from there.

The shapes of the riverbed also contribute to the character of the landscape. Veliki and Mali Predaselj form the narrowest section of the Kamniška Bistrica riverbed. The Veliki Predaselj section of the gorge is 30 metres deep. In a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream, there is also a waterfall about 30 metres high, considered a relatively easily accessible hiking destination.

Trails, gorge and glacial erratics

The Kamniška Bistrica–Žagana peč–Kokrsko sedlo trail is an easy mountain hiking trail starting at Dom v Kamniški Bistrici. Žagana peč is a glacial erratic described as such; the stated time required for the route from Dom v Kamniški Bistrici is 45 minutes. Sivnica is also a glacial erratic and is considered the largest erratic boulder in Slovenia. The memorial park for people who died in accidents in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps can be reached from Dom v Kamniški Bistrici in a stated time of 20 minutes.

On the Koželjeva footpath, visitors can see mountain stream tributaries and smaller hidden springs throughout the Kamniška Bistrica valley. The Predaselj Gorge can also be experienced in different ways: by prior arrangement, mountain rescuers can rappel visitors into the gorge and guide them along a steel cable running through the gorge. A walk of just a few minutes along the Predaselj Gorge opens up views of the riverbed and the crystal-clear water of the Kamniška Bistrica.

A paved road leads through the valley to the mountain inn in Kamniška Bistrica. Another experience combines cycling, hiking, relaxation and Kneipp therapy; the route leads from Keršmančev Park to the source of the Kamniška Bistrica.

Water and regional history

During a guided experience, visitors can taste different spring waters under the guidance of a local guide and a water sommelier. The valley’s history includes the stone table Archduke’s Table (Firštova miza) in the Kamniška Bistrica valley. It was named after the meal eaten there by Archduke Charles II and his retinue following a hunting expedition.

The hunting lodge of King Alexander stands in the immediate vicinity of the source of the Kamniška Bistrica. It was designed in 1933 according to plans by Jože Plečnik.
