Holiday Apartment in Kamnik: Culture, Trails and Mountain Views

Kamnik combines traces of history, art, river landscapes and trails in the nearby mountains. Between museums, galleries, preserved buildings and views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the city reveals itself in many different ways.

Culture and History

The Intermunicipal Museum Kamnik has its exhibition rooms in Zaprice Castle above Kamnik. The castle is located near the railway station and bus stations. The Cultural Three-M (3 M) walk leads through units of this museum; visitors can choose the order of the stops themselves. The exhibition Reflections of Kamnik’s Millennia includes educational areas where visitors can learn about Roman games, coinage, ancient measurements and legends.

The Miha Maleš Gallery presents a permanent exhibition on the art history of Kamnik from the 18th to the 20th century. It features works from the fields of sculpture, painting, architecture and photography. In 1979, Miha Maleš donated a total of 2,590 works to the city of Kamnik; the municipality housed this extensive donation the following year in a town house at Glavni trg 2. Contemporary art also has its own exhibition space for contemporary artistic work at the View Gallery in the centre of Kamnik.

The exhibition in Rudolf Maister’s birthplace at Šutna 23 occupies part of the ground floor of a 19th-century town house near the parish church of Šutna. Šutna Street preserves distinctive shop signs and other traces of craftsmanship. The Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, a work by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, is preserved in the Franciscan Monastery of Kamnik. The Franciscan Library in Kamnik is another historic feature: it preserves around 10,000 books and volumes printed before the end of the 18th century.

A two-storey Romanesque chapel with a crypt has been preserved in Kamnik and is now considered one of the city’s most important landmarks. The festival Dnevi narodnih noš in oblačilne dediščine in Kamnik dates back to 1966 and attracts more than 30,000 visitors every year.

Trails and Landscape

The Kamnik–Godič cycling route is 3.2 km long and runs mostly along the Kamniška Bistrica River. The route includes ten rest areas, some of which are equipped with unique wooden play equipment, information boards and bicycle racks.

In the expressly nearby surroundings of Kamnik, a paved road runs through the Kamniška Bistrica Valley to the mountain hut in Kamniška Bistrica. Also in the expressly nearby surroundings of the town, the source of the Kamniška Bistrica River lies in the Kamniška Bistrica Valley. There are themed walking trails in the hills around Snovik Spa.

In the expressly nearby surroundings of Kamnik, Orglice Waterfall, around 30 metres high, lies in a side valley of the Kamniška Bela stream. Access to the pools below the waterfall is relatively easy; the area is suitable for hiking. A viewpoint in Kamnik offers views of the city centre and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. Leisure and Local Insights

The beach volleyball courts at Pod Skalo are located near the centre of Kamnik, next to the municipal Olympic swimming pool. Kamnik’s municipal swimming pool is close to the old town. Kamnik also offers a culinary tour of four breweries, accompanied by matching beer snacks.
