Grosuplje: Holiday Apartment Between Karst Nature and Culture

Grosuplje combines impressive karst landscapes with visible traces of a long history and a variety of trails. Around the Slovenian town, the experiences range from wet meadows, intermittently water-filled lakes and underground chambers to defensive camps, burial mounds, traditional festivals and regional products. This creates a diverse picture of a destination where nature, culture and local ways of life stand closely side by side.

Nature and Landscape

In the southeast of the Municipality of Grosuplje lies Radensko polje Landscape Park. Covering slightly more than 4 km², this karst field preserves a natural landscape of meadows, shrubs and forests, as well as intermittently water-filled lakes. At the same time, Radensko polje is considered an important biodiversity hotspot: Its characteristic habitats include dry and wet grasslands, riparian forest, remnants of a peat bog, as well as aquatic, riverside and forest vegetation.

The landscape park offers opportunities for walking, running, cycling and horse riding. Koščakov hrib, also called Brinjski hrib, is a 409-metre-high elevation approximately 0.5 kilometres north of the centre of Grosuplje. Several starting points and trails lead to Koščakov hrib, which is also known by the name Brinjski hrib.

In Mala Račna, the Žabja hiša Nature Conservation Centre is located on an island directly next to the spring of the Šica karst watercourse. It is the first nature conservation centre of its kind in Slovenia. Self-guided visits, guided tours and workshops on Radensko polje are available there.

History and Culture

Tabor nad Cerovim is one of the best-preserved anti-Ottoman defensive camps in Slovenia. The defensive wall, with the museum room in the northwestern tower and the Church of St Nicholas, is open for visits according to a schedule. A marked access trail of the European long-distance hiking trail E6 to Tabor nad Cerovim also begins in Grosuplje.

In the area around Grosuplje, the territory of Magdalenska gora was continuously inhabited from the Early Iron Age through the Celtic invasion and into the Roman occupation. The 28 clearly visible burial mounds on Magdalenska gora bear witness to more than 1,000 years of settlement.

The underground world is also part of the town's cultural surroundings. Županova jama offers seven underground chambers richly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as 600 metres of developed cave paths. The Koželj Beekeeping Museum in Šmarje–Sap provides another insight into the region's history. It displays beekeeping literature from 1700 to the present day, as well as various hive types, different honey extractors, beekeeping tools and historical equipment.

Trails and Experiences

The 5.2-kilometre Kingfisher Nature Trail leads from the village of Cerovo to Log along the edge of the forest, across wet meadows, through the hamlet of Podlom and to the source of the Podlomščica stream. The Grosupeljska planinska pot is approximately 80 kilometres long and can be divided into sections depending on fitness and the time available. Since 2015, it has been marked as a dual-use trail and is also open to mountain bikers.

A shorter cycling loop is the 20-kilometre Grosupeljska družinska kolesarska pot. It is mostly flat and has only one short, gently sloping ascent. The route starts at the Tourist Information Centre in Grosuplje and returns there.

Radensko polje Landscape Park can also be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Local Life and Events

At the Mestna tržnica Grosuplje, you can buy local seasonal food directly from the vendors every Saturday morning. The local events calendar also includes several traditional events. Večer pod lipo is a traditional event organised by the Zveza kulturnih društev Grosuplje, bringing together choirs and vocal groups from the Municipality of Grosuplje. In recent years, Večer pod lipo has been held at Kulturni dom Grosuplje.

Grosuplje v jeseni is a traditional festival in the centre of Grosuplje. Its programme includes stalls, workshops and culinary offerings. Another recurring event is the 26. Maraton treh občin, a cycling marathon with road and family routes.

The Vodomčev festival is a traditional event for children and adults. The programme includes guided tours of Vodomčev gaj. The festival also includes the Ptica na dlani experience, where visitors can observe bird ringing at close range.
