Plateau and Mountain Pass

Radlek lies in the western part of the Bloške planota, the Bloke Plateau. The village is situated in a small depression on a saddle between Pogorelec, Lisec and Hrib. Pogorelec reaches 807 metres, Lisec 872 metres and Hrib 805 metres in elevation. Thus, a depression, a saddle and a plateau meet in the immediate landscape. The depression refers to the lower-lying terrain, the saddle to the transition between elevations, and the plateau to the overarching landscape area. The elevation figures distinguish the three named elevations from one another without reducing the landscape to a single type of terrain.

These three geographical terms describe different forms of terrain. The elevations of Pogorelec, Lisec and Hrib also give the location a clear spatial framework. For visitors who wish to perceive the landscape not merely as a backdrop but through its forms, Radlek therefore remains closely connected with the topography of the Bloke Plateau.

Culture and Remembrance in Radlek

The Chapel of the Holy Cross stands in the village. At the western edge of the village, a memorial plaque commemorates Ivan Furlan-Drago. It is mounted on a natural rock beside the road and is dedicated to the commander of the Notranjska unit, who fell in June 1944. The plaque was unveiled in 1996.

Another memorial site is located on a forest road west of the village. The monument to the twelve hostages stands there. It marks the place where hostages were shot on 13 August 1942 and was unveiled in 1956. The chapel, the plaque and the monument are located at different points in the village and each tells a separate part of Radlek’s history.
