Holiday apartment in Kútniky: the flat Danube Lowland and cultural heritage

Kútniky is located in the Danube Lowland, in the central part of Žitný ostrov. The municipality lies at an elevation of approximately 112 to 115 metres above sea level and is situated on the main road between Bratislava and Komárno. Its agricultural character has been preserved to this day.

Landscape

The municipality of Kútniky is flat and free of woodland. The subsoil consists of gravel and sand from the Kolarovo Formation, with thick layers of river deposits from the Danube. A canal drains the municipality; it also includes a peatland area used for extraction purposes.

Cycle paths and the Danube surroundings

The V/2 Kútniky–S7 Canal cycle-path branch is 5 kilometres long and intended for mountain bikes. V/2 begins in Kútniky and connects the main routes V and IX. The branch has been built within the territory of Kútniky; outside the municipality, it is marked along the embankment beside the S7 Canal.

A 73.5-kilometre, practically flat and easy-to-follow route begins in Dunajská Streda, 2.5 km from Kútniky. It forms part of the International Danube Cycle Path. In nearby Dunajská Streda, visitors can also see a farmhouse kitchen with traditional furnishings and an open fireplace in the ethnographic section.

The two routes described differ considerably in their extent and course: the V/2 branch connects Kútniky with the main routes V and IX as well as the S7 Canal, while the route starting in Dunajská Streda runs for 73.5 kilometres through the flat surrounding area. Their respective lengths and reference points therefore remain distinct.

Culture and history

Several historical monuments are located in the settlements belonging to Kútniky. Fuchsov majer in the settlement of Enyed was an exemplary agricultural farm that permanently employed 50 families. Two stable buildings from the original complex have survived; next to one of them is a fire station dating from the early 20th century. The Fuchsov majer fire station houses a hand-operated fire pump from 1912.

Only the three-storey tower remains of the former distillery in Enyed. The surviving former distillery tower in Enyed is articulated at the corners by pilaster strips made of unplastered bricks. The bell tower in Töböréte was built in 1921 and moved to its current location in 1972. The bell tower in Blažov was built in 1913 and restored in 1981.

Smaller monuments also preserve local history. The wayside shrine in Hegybeneéte on Bratislava Road was erected in 1924 by believers from the municipality. The bell of the monument in Hegybeneéte was cast by the Fischer brothers' company in Trnava. In Hegybeneéte, the single-storey rectangular house No. 50, with a thatched gable roof and rear outbuildings, was also built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The sculptor and woodcarver György Lipcsey was born in house No. 80 in Kútniky. A wayside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in Blažov, Kútniky.
