Holiday apartment in Tatranska Lomnica: skiing, mountain railways and the High Tatras

The Tatranská Lomnica ski area has different sections for winter sports: the lower section has blue pistes for beginners, while the middle section near the Štart transfer station is designed for advanced skiers. The black piste from Lomnické sedlo has an elevation difference of 1,300 metres. The longest carving run in Tatranská Lomnica is 6.5 kilometres long and up to 60 metres wide.

Winter sports and mountain railways

The mountain railways are also among the defining experiences in Tatranská Lomnica. A cable-car journey from Tatranská Lomnica leads via Štart to Skalnaté pleso at an elevation of 1,751 metres. The onward cable-car journey to Lomnické sedlo runs via Štart and Skalnaté pleso and reaches an elevation of 2,190 metres. From Skalnaté pleso, a red, 14-seat aerial tramway continues to Lomnický štít, overcoming 855 metres of elevation in 8.5 minutes.

Lomnický štít is the second-highest peak of the High Tatras and a destination for a family outing. A green-marked hiking trail also leads from Lomnické sedlo to Veľká Lomnická veža. This viewpoint lies at an elevation of 2,215 metres and is easily accessible for families with children thanks to the chairlift.

Nature

The Pramenisko educational trail begins at the botanical garden in Tatranská Lomnica, follows a circular route back to Tatranská Lomnica and can be walked in less than two hours. Five information boards and two viewing platforms accompany the trail; from there, the view extends over a montane alluvial forest. Expozícia tatranskej prírody is a 3.2-hectare botanical garden in Tatranská Lomnica. It showcases rare and endangered plants and trees of the Tatras.

A green-marked hiking trail connects Tatranská Lomnica with Skalnaté pleso. The trip to Skalnaté pleso from Tatranská Lomnica offers opportunities for walks and hikes around the mountain lake. Svištia skala is also located near Skalnaté pleso, a children's playground directly below the cable car. It includes a marmot-like structure, a slide and a tunnel.

Lomnické sedlo is a viewpoint overlooking the Poprad Basin and the distant peaks of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Galéria Encián is located near Skalnaté pleso. It offers young artists free exhibition space for sculpture, wood carving, photography and painting.

Culture and history

The Múzeum TANAP-u in Tatranská Lomnica presents the nature and history of the High Tatras. It also explores the former life and culture of the population living below the Tatras. Another cultural connection to the mountain region leads to Lomnické sedlo: it was a filming location for the 1970 Slovak film “Medená veža”.

Family-friendly attractions in Tatranská Lomnica include Tatrabob, an almost 500-metre-long alpine coaster for children and adults. Lomnica Hotel was built in 1893 and was the largest and best-constructed building in the High Tatras in the following decade. The history of the mountain railways also goes back a long way: construction of the cable car from Tatranská Lomnica to Lomnický štít was initiated in 1936 at the instigation of Juraj Orságh, director of the State Spa Institutions of Tatranská Lomnica. The ceremonial opening took place in 1941.
