Horný Smokovec: Holiday Apartment, Trails, Mountains and Culture

Horný Smokovec serves as a starting point for hikes and as a base for accommodation. At the same time, the village is a stop on the Tatranská elektrická železnica (TEŽ). In the settlement, nature trails, mountain names, railway and local history, as well as art and historical destinations, come together.

These different connections give Horný Smokovec a clearly structured local character: A walking trail stands alongside named mountains, the railway alongside a technical monument, and historic buildings complement the cultural destinations in the surrounding area. As a result, the view of the village extends from specific trails and transport points to regionally situated landscape and cultural sites.

Nature and Trails

The VT17 Okolo Smokovcov trail is considered an easy walking trail with little elevation gain. In the immediate vicinity of Horný Smokovec are Veža, Slovkovská nos, Malý Kostol and Slavkovský štít, each a mountain. In the wider regional surroundings of Horný Smokovec is also Tatrzański Park Narodowy, a park.

For orientation within the landscape, the specific walking trail, the individual mountain names and the more broadly regional park are therefore clearly distinct from one another. The natural features range from a trail with little elevation gain to several named mountains in the immediate surroundings and a park in the wider regional surroundings.

The Intersport GALFY Horný Smokovec branch rents bicycles, e-bikes, outdoor equipment, as well as ski touring and skiing equipment. The TEŽ is present in Horný Smokovec through the local stop.

History

The Meniareň prúdu Horný Smokovec traction power substation has been designated a cultural monument since 2010. It is located on the northern side of the railway line in Horný Smokovec and is still used today as a TEŽ traction power substation. The building ensemble was designated as the new Horný Smokovec settlement in 1930.

In the 1930s, the larger Helios guesthouse and two well-equipped climatotherapeutic sanatoriums were built in Horný Smokovec: the Dr. Jána Opatrného Sanatorium from 1930 and the Dr. Júliusa Holzmanna-Horného Sanatorium from 1935. Both now serve as children's treatment clinics. In the western part of today's Horný Smokovec settlement, in an area called Pekná vyhliadka, a wooden lookout tower and a popular walking trail leading to it stood in the 1870s.

Thus, in Horný Smokovec, railway infrastructure, the designated substation, the settlement's building ensemble and the former guesthouse and sanatorium buildings form a shared historical local context. Pekná vyhliadka complements these testimonies with the western part of the settlement, featuring a lookout tower and walking trail from the 1870s.

Art and Historical Destinations

The Tatranská galéria displays works by important painters inspired by the beauty of the Tatra Mountains. In the surroundings of Horný Smokovec are Votrubova Chata, a historic site, and the Wooden Articular Church in Kežmarok, a church. In the wider regional surroundings lies Kláštorisko, a ruin.
