Štrbské Pleso is part of Tatra National Park (TANAP), the oldest national park in Slovakia. Štrbské pleso is the second-largest mountain lake in the Slovak part of the High Tatras. Nature

A fitness and oxygen trail runs around Štrbské pleso. It is approximately 2.2 kilometres long and has six stations. Another educational trail leads from Štrbské Pleso to Popradské pleso and back. It starts in Štrbské Pleso, has 14 stations and provides information about the plant and animal species of the surrounding area, as well as the formation of the Tatras and their geology. This educational trail remains open in winter; when there is snow, hikers are redirected to a winter route.

The Štrbské Pleso educational trail is accessible to people with disabilities and open year-round. Using 40 stylish wooden information panels in Slovak and English, it covers local history, flora, fauna, notable figures associated with the area, sporting activities and the history of the spa.

Culture

Smaller facilities also tell the story of the area’s history. Jazierka lásky were originally known as Štrbské rybníky, or fishponds, and were used by Jozef Szentiványi to breed trout. The Skokanské mostíky ski jumps acquired their present form during preparations for the 1970 World Ski Championships.

Winter sports

The Štrbské Pleso ski resort offers nine kilometres of easy, gentle downhill runs as well as intermediate slopes. A ski touring route starts at the bottom station of the chairlift to Solisko and follows yellow markings to the foot of the Skok waterfall. Another winter activity is a 100-metre-long snow tubing track.

The cross-country skiing area near Štrbské Pleso offers a visitor tent, a buffet, a ski school, as well as ski services and equipment rental. It includes eight trails ranging from 1.4 to 5 kilometres in length.

Getting there

The Tatra Electric Railway connects Poprad Tatry, Starý Smokovec and Štrbské Pleso. The rack railway, which has been in operation since 1896, runs between Tatranská Štrba and Štrbské Pleso.
