Discover Štrba: Panorama of the High Tatras and Culture

From Štrba, the panorama of the High Tatras unfolds to the north. The mountain range thus forms the scenic introduction to the area, while architectural heritage, history, cycling and traditions add further distinct themes. Especially when travelling with several people, these different interests can be given weight alongside one another without combining them into a single excursion programme.

Geographical setting

A European watershed runs through the territory of Štrba, separating drainage towards the Black Sea from drainage towards the Baltic Sea. For geographical orientation, a view of a mountain range and a geographical line with two different drainage directions are presented side by side here. The panorama describes the visible landscape, whereas the watershed represents a geographical relationship within the municipality's territory.

Culture

The Protestant church in Štrba dates from 1784. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Andrew in Štrba dates from 1884. The two churches therefore belong to different construction periods. Štrba is also home to an original Štrba wooden cottage; its log construction is designated as a protected cultural monument. The churches and wooden architecture thus illustrate different forms of architectural heritage.

The Štrbän folklore ensemble has been active in Štrba for 50 years. Popular poetry festivals have been held in Štrba for 67 years. Churches, wooden architecture, folklore and poetry thus stand alongside one another as separate cultural focal points: the first two themes are linked to specific buildings, while the other two are linked to cultural activities maintained over many years.

History

The remains of the vanished medieval settlement of Šoldov lie on the edge of the municipality of Štrba, along a field path towards Važec. Šoldov is an important historical site. Partially reconstructed buildings of the settlement, a monument, an information board and a small seating area are located near Šoldov.

Šoldov can therefore be regarded as a separate historical focal point alongside the churches and the wooden cottage. The field path towards Važec describes the location of the site on the edge of the municipality.

Cycling

A section of the cycle path between Štrba and Lučivná has been completed in Štrba. This section is part of the cross-border cycling route Cesta okolo TATIER.

For day planning, the two details are clearly distinct: the completed section identifies a specific connection between Štrba and Lučivná, while the cycling route places it within a cross-border route. The municipality of Štrba, in cooperation with the URBÁR Štrba land association and the Štrba agricultural cooperative, invited people to the 25th edition of the municipal day, Deň obce Štrba.
