Spišský Štiavnik is crossed by the Hornádska Cyklomagistrála 034. The route runs along the Hornád Valley on the edge of Slovak Paradise and is approximately 33 kilometres long. This means that cycling, architectural history and sacred art are clearly distinguishable themes for planning your trip. You can consider these aspects separately and give them different weight depending on your preferred daily rhythm.

Culture

The local Cistercian Abbey of the Virgin Mary was founded between 1216 and 1223 by the brother of the Hungarian King Béla IV. The Renaissance manor house dates from the 16th to the 17th century and was built on the site of a medieval monastery. The manor house was extended according to a design by D. Jurkovič.

The manor house is a two-storey building with a square floor plan and corner towers. The manor house complex includes outbuildings and a chapel. The chapel was built from reused stones and Early Gothic architectural details from the monastery. When viewing it, the building form, floor plan, towers and reused materials can be perceived as separate architectural points of observation.

In the centre of Spišský Štiavnik, beside the Hornád, stands the Gothic Roman Catholic church in a spacious walled courtyard. Its main altar is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church dates from the end of the 14th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style in the 18th century. For historical classification, you can consider the church both according to the period in which it was built and according to its later remodelling.

Landscape

The surroundings of Spišský Štiavnik include the Kláštorisko ruins and the mountains of Krížova, Tri Kopce, Orlov and Roveň. Sans-souci, a church, is also located nearby. For your own orientation, you can note the ruins, mountains and church separately as different subject areas.

Geographical Context

The wider regional surroundings of Spišský Štiavnik include Spiš Castle, a castle, and the Wooden Articular Church in Kežmarok, a church. The spatial structure can be read clearly: first the place, then the surroundings and finally the wider regional area. When planning, you can mentally organise the buildings in the village, the points mentioned in the surroundings and the destinations in the wider regional area.

This results in two different ways of viewing the weighting of a stay: the cycle route represents a longer, continuous stretch, while the manor house and church are individual historical sites. The other destinations broaden the view beyond the village without mixing up the themes of the village centre.
