Holiday apartment in Beša: Churches, History and Nature

Beša combines a long local history with unusual archaeological traces, striking churches and nature experiences in the surrounding area. The village was first mentioned in writing on 5 July 1292. The house in the centre of the village preserves a special memory: when its cellar was built in 1902, remains of a mammoth skeleton were discovered, commemorated today by a memorial plaque. Earlier settlement is also documented. A hoard of bronze objects from the Late Bronze Age, Roman-Barbarian settlement finds and a Slavic inhumation cemetery dating from the 10th to 11th century came to light in the area of Beša.

Culture and History

The more recent history of the village also includes Beša railway station. The first train passed through the station on 25 September 1914. Beša therefore brings together archaeological evidence from different periods with reminders of the village’s development in the 20th century.

One prominent building is the Reformed, also known as Calvinist, church. It was built in 1793 on its present ground plan; its current appearance dates from alterations made in 1903. Three bells hang in the church tower, one of which comes from the church of the abandoned village of Mochovce.

Another religious building is Kostol sv. Anny. The church is a Baroque church built in 1770 and bears the heritage register number 12170/1. Its structure comprises a single-nave space, a presbytery with a segmental ending and a projecting tower. Kostol sv. Anny is in good condition and continues to be used for its religious purpose.

Nature and Trails

The legally protected Turkey oak Bešiansky cer (Quercus cerris) stands in Bešianska cerina. This tree offers a wide view of the surrounding area. The wetlands near Beša present a different type of landscape and can be reached by taking a short detour from the cycle route to Podhájska.

Route 5525M also passes through Beša, connecting the village with Trávnica and Bardoňovo. In this way, the natural environment, the village area and the routes through the surrounding region appear in different, clearly defined contexts.

Sport and Events

Organised football in Beša dates back to the founding of the Sokol Beša football club in 1949. Between 1973 and 1974, a sports complex with a covered stand was built. Since 2007, gatherings and races for off-road and special vehicles have been held in the hills of Bešianska pahorkatina near the football complex. Prepared off-road tracks are available for this purpose.

A recurring event is also a motorcycle gathering held twice a year. Afterwards, the participants continue together to the Studnička pilgrimage site to attend Mass there. Traditional disco events and entertainment take place during Bešianske hody. The cultural centre in Beša is used for cultural and social events, which are also open to the wider public from the surrounding area.
