Holiday apartment in Mútne – Pilsko Nature Reserve and cultural monuments
Mútne combines a clearly defined landscape with protected natural areas and distinctive cultural landmarks. The Pilsko National Nature Reserve extends over 266 hectares into the cadastral area of Mútne. Natural spruce-fir primeval forests and alpine flysch meadows are protected there. At the same time, Pilsko is an important source area for the Orava River. The reserve includes numerous springs feeding tributaries of the Mútňanka, bringing forests, meadows and watercourses together in one interconnected natural area.
Nature
Another natural area is the Spálený grúnik protected area. It protects important, well-preserved peat bog plant communities in waterlogged spruce forests. The protected stands include rare and endangered species of Slovak flora. The peat bogs, wet woodland areas and open flysch meadows of Pilsko belong to different protected areas, whose respective vegetation forms characterize the natural environment of Mútne.
Landscape
Mútne lies on the broad, flat ridges of the Podbeskydská brázda. This landform defines the spatial character of the village, as does the woodland in its northwestern part: this area of Mútne is predominantly forested. The waterways are also part of the geographical setting. The Mútnik stream flows into the Veselovský stream. Together with the springs of the Mútňanka and the source area of the Orava River, this watercourse system forms another clearly identifiable element of the landscape.
Culture
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Mútne is part of the village's history. The three-nave, Neo-Romanesque building was constructed between 1875 and 1878. Its three-nave layout combines the spatial division of the interior with Neo-Romanesque architectural language. The precise dating from 1875 to 1878 makes clear that both details together describe the building's form and period of construction, rather than separate characteristics. The church is registered as a national cultural monument under reference number ÚZPF 232/1. This brings together architectural features, a clearly dated construction period and documented monument status in a single building.
Mútne's monuments also include Rowlandov kameň, which dates from 1862. Another cultural point of reference is the Mútňan folklore ensemble. It primarily performs Goral songs, accompanied by a heligónka accordion. During its performances, the ensemble also demonstrates flax weaving and spinning, the making of brooms from willow branches and the production of wooden shingles. The traditional customs portrayed include Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and harvest festivals. Music, crafts and the cycle of the year appear here as interconnected elements of the cultural programme.
Village Character and Setting
The individual features complement one another without repeating the same landscape or cultural aspect: the broad ridges and predominantly forested terrain characterize Mútne's location, while the streams and springs identify its water connections. Pilsko and Spálený grúnik represent protected forest, meadow and peat bog formations. The church, Rowlandov kameň and Mútňan, by contrast, point to architectural history, monument preservation, music, crafts and traditional festivals.
