Bobrov brings together several clearly distinct facets: sacred buildings, traces of the historic linen-trading tradition and the protected landscape of Upper Orava. Between the church, chapels, Stations of the Cross and wetlands, the village presents a setting in which cultural history and natural features are equally prominent.

Culture

The sacred buildings include the Church of St James the Elder. It is a single-nave Baroque church with a polygonal-ended presbytery and a projecting tower. It was built from 1745 to 1753 before being remodelled from 1777 to 1788. Inside, it has four Baroque altars and a pulpit; it is also registered as a national cultural monument of Slovakia.

Next to the church, on the adjacent hill, the Bobrovská calvary was built from 1890 to 1894 with 14 Stations of the Cross. It was consecrated on 15 August 1894, and the chapels contain terracotta depictions of the Stations of the Cross. Bobrov is also home to the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which features architectural elements of Oriental sacred buildings and is registered as a national cultural monument of Slovakia. It was built from 1890 to 1894 and consecrated on 15 August 1894.

The old cemetery in Bobrov, also known as the “plague cemetery”, includes the Chapel of St Anne, dating from 1853. It contains a small altar and a statue of the Madonna and Child. The Ukrižovanie Krista ensemble adds to the sacred imagery: it is a life-size zinc group created in 1894, depicting the crucified Jesus with the Virgin Mary, the Apostle John and Mary Magdalene. The Bobrovská púť Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, locally called “Zelná”, takes place every year.

Another historical trace can be found in the remains of houses associated with the historic linen-trading tradition. The linen-trading courtyards in Bobrov were built on the model of manor houses. Their façades were richly decorated, while the interiors featured stucco vaults.

Nature and cycling routes

The entire cadastral area of Bobrov lies within the Upper Orava Protected Landscape Area. In the regional Upper Orava Natura 2000 site, the wetlands of the Orava Basin and the surroundings of the Orava Reservoir are important breeding habitats for the common kingfisher, black stork, spotted crake and common tern.

Several cycling routes run through the protected areas of Upper Orava. Between Námestovo and Bobrov, visitors can see the Klinské rašelinisko peat bog and other wetlands. In the context of cycling routes around Bobrov, the shore of the Orava Reservoir can also be explored.
