Rudina – Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments in Slovakia

Rudina lies on the northeastern edge of the Javorníky Mountains in the valley of the Janinský Potok above its confluence with the Kysuca River. The village has a clearly recognizable settlement structure: characteristic is an almost 3 km-long linear development along the Janinský Potok. The landscape of the municipality is also distinctly shaped. Rudina is predominantly forested and hilly, with elevations ranging from approximately 350 to 560 metres.

Nature

Rudina’s natural monuments include the protected lime trees known as “Tri kopce”. Alongside the forested and hilly surroundings, they represent another specific feature of the municipality. The location on the edge of the Javorníky Mountains, the Janinský Potok valley and the proximity to the Kysuca are geographical features that give Rudina its distinctive character.

Culture

Rudina’s history can be traced back a long way. Archaeological finds in the municipality and its surroundings attest to settlement as early as the La Tène period. The first written mention of Rudina dates from 1359. Another historical detail is preserved by a chapel in the village: it was originally a Classicist bell tower from the early 19th century.

The more recent history of the village includes the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was consecrated on 28 January 1995 and elevated to a parish church on 1 July 2004. The Rudina monument to those who fell in the First World War also commemorates the events of the 20th century. It was erected in 1933 with a bust of M. R. Štefánik; a commemorative document was placed beneath it.

Living traditions are reflected in folklore. The Dúbravka folklore group performs at all cultural and social events organized by the municipality of Rudina and represents the municipality at district competitions for singing groups. A folklore group also presents centuries-old village customs and makes them accessible to the younger generation.

Rudina thus brings together various forms of cultural expression: the village’s history is documented through archaeological finds, an early written mention, historic buildings and a monument. Folklore additionally brings traditional village customs into events and competitions. Alongside the Dúbravka group, passing these customs on to the younger generation is also part of the village’s cultural identity.

Transport links

Rudina is well connected both by rail and by road. By rail, Rudina is 3 km from Kysucké Nové Mesto and 7 km from Žilina. Buses run regularly from Rudina to Kysucké Nové Mesto; from there, travellers can continue towards Žilina or Čadca.

Sport

Trial cycling is also part of the village’s events calendar. The Slovak UCI Trial Cycling Championships are regularly held in Rudina.
