Holiday apartment in Veličná: Churches, Manor House and Market History

The townscape of Veličná includes churches, the Župný dom and a Baroque manor house; at the same time, the history of the town dates back to the 14th century. Sacred art, former market use and preserved architectural details give the town several clearly recognisable historical layers.

This historical character is not limited to a single building. Veličná is home to religious buildings, the Župný dom and the manor house built for the Orava estate. They reveal different building functions: religious use, public trade, municipal administration and aristocratic representation appear as clearly distinguishable elements. Portals, arcades, stucco and furnishings also make these different functions visible in the preserved structural features.

Culture

The Roman Catholic church in Veličná was originally built in the Gothic style in the 14th century. It is still surrounded by a defensive wall; in front of the church stands a Calvary dating from 1777. Older traces have also been preserved inside: furnishings from the late 17th century include a folk-carved nativity scene.

The Evangelical church was built in 1785 as a Toleration church. Its main altar features a painting of the Ascension of Christ by Peter Bohúň from 1864. Another connection to the artist can be found at the Evangelical vicarage built in 1788, which bears a commemorative plaque dedicated to Peter Bohúň.

The Župný dom, a building from the mid-17th century, has been preserved on the square. A market was held between the columns beneath its upper floor, while the upper floor contained rooms used by the town administration. The former connection between public life, trade and administration thus remains legible in the building's structural layout.

The Baroque manor house in Veličná was built in 1746 for the Orava estate. A valuable portal, an arcade passage, stucco ceilings on the upper floor and an arcaded courtyard have been preserved there. Together with the two churches and the Župný dom, these buildings form different expressions of the history of the town and region.

History

Veličná had already been a market town since the 14th century. A document from 1370 mentions Orava as a county with its seat in Veličná. The market history is also connected with an old market road through Orava that linked the Váh and Turiec valleys with the Polish part of the Carpathians.

Events

In 2026, the municipality of Veličná published a programme for the 34th Veličiansky jarmok and the 28th Folklórne slávnosti Dolnej Oravy.

At Rajčula Park in Veličná, tennis courts can be booked through a reservation system. The Rajčuliáda programme included competitions as well as a cultural programme featuring performances by folk and local music groups.
