Holiday apartment in Párnica – lakes, Modrotlač and the Orava landscape

Párnica lies on the southwestern edge of the Orava Highlands and at the northeastern foothills of the Little Fatra. The village is located in the Orava Valley on both banks of the Zázrivka stream. The Párnické Lakes are a distinctive landscape feature: the area comprises 21 lakes of varying sizes that were created on the Orava floodplain through gravel extraction between 1957 and 1997. Beavers are also part of the Párnické Lakes ecosystem. Párnica is also home to a thermal mineral spring.

Nature and trails

The educational trail at the Párnické Lakes begins at the bus stop in Párnica. An information board and signposts are located there. The trail is 1.5 kilometres long and takes about 30 minutes at a brisk pace; it is also suitable for cyclists. At the EKOcentrum Pod Širákom by the Párnické Lakes, there is an outdoor classroom with an interactive table about the local wildlife. Signposts at the EKOcentrum Pod Širákom lead visitors to a fox educational trail and into a beaver bay.

Culture and history

Izba starých materí is Párnica's first municipal museum. Its rooms include a rural living room, a barn and a room with historical documents, including photographs. The museum displays 230 exhibits. They were loaned or donated by residents and by people originally from Párnica. Traditional local crafts are also part of the village's heritage: in Párnica, wagon making, carpentry and wood carving were among the local crafts.

The first known written reference to Párnica dates from 1420. At that time, the village was described as “Villa Parnice” and as a subject settlement of Orava Castle. Another visible testament to the village's history is the evangelical church in Párnica. The monumental church building was erected in 1926–1927 according to a design by the architect J. Burjan and features echoes of Cubist decorative elements. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The altarpiece was created by M. Mitrovský and is dated 1928.

Crafts and events

At Ateliér Rabada in Párnica, visitors can take part in workshops where they design and create their own original Modrotlač pattern. During a guided tour of Ateliér Rabada, visitors can also learn about the Modrotlač production process. The traditional Párnickô švábkobraňá festival is a regular fixture in the events calendar. It takes place on 22 and 23 August 2026 in Párnica's sports complex and offers folklore, music, crafts, traditional food and entertainment for the whole family.

Activities and events

Šport centrum Lučivná SKI is located in Párnica. Its ski runs are situated in the Little Fatra National Park in the valley of the Zázrivka River. The centre offers a ski school as well as ski and snowboard rental. The black Čierna run is 1,400 metres long, has an elevation difference of 504 metres and an average gradient of 36 percent.
