Dolný Kubín: Culture, the Orava Landscape and Holiday Apartments

The Orava River flows through Dolný Kubín and divides the town into two parts. Dolný Kubín lies in the southwest of the Orava Highlands, on their boundary with the Orava Magura.

Location and Townscape

The historic townscape is defined by Hviezdoslav Square. It is considered the most important medieval urban monument in Dolný Kubín and is lined with several Renaissance and Baroque burgher houses. One of the prominent cultural monuments is the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the oldest cultural and historical monument in the town. Its tower dates from the 14th century, while the Late Gothic altar dates from the beginning of the 16th century. There is also a Renaissance epitaph of the Zmeškalovci family from 1622.

Culture and History

The Župný dom dates from the last third of the 17th century and houses the Orava Gallery with its permanent exhibitions. They feature Slovak visual art of the 20th century, the Orava woodcarver Štefan Siváň, and a selection of traditional folk art. The Hviezdoslav Museum is considered the oldest literary museum in Slovakia. In addition to Vavrinec Čaplovič’s book collections, it presents the life and work of Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav.

The Čaplovič Library exhibition includes manuscripts, incunabula dating from before 1500, and valuable art and map collections from the historic library holdings. The library also offers a public exhibition about the scholar and private book collector Vavrinec Čaplovič, as well as the fields of knowledge represented in his historic collection.

The T. H. Florin memorial room has been open to the public in the Florin House since 1997. It contains the original furnishings, collections of poems, personal belongings and biographical information. The Florin House is currently also used for temporary exhibitions in the fields of social sciences and natural history, prepared by the P. O. Hviezdoslav Orava Museum.

Literature and Events

Hviezdoslavov Kubín is a nationwide competition and showcase of artistic recitation of poetry and prose. The programme also includes the work of recitation groups, as well as children’s, youth and adult poetry theatre. This event has been held since 1954. The 72nd edition of Hviezdoslavov Kubín took place in Dolný Kubín from 16 to 20 June 2026.

Trails and Leisure

The Kuzmínovo educational trail begins at the Jewish cemetery in Dolný Kubín, follows the access road to the Kuzmínovo chalet and then continues to two shelters at the cross-country ski tracks. Eight information boards provide information about Dolný Kubín, the Kuzmínovo area and the animals, medicinal plants and mushrooms found there. There are also two interactive boards for children. The municipal cycling network includes the 43-kilometre Pod Kuzmínovom–Medzihradné route.

The Kuzmínovo leisure centre has illuminated cross-country skiing and downhill ski slopes. They are located 400 metres from Dolný Kubín’s historic square. An aquapark with pools, a lazy river, whirlpools and slides is also open year-round. The facilities also include a sauna world, a spacious fitness centre, and a massage and rehabilitation centre.

Places of Remembrance

The Jewish Cemetery of Dolný Kubín is located near the historic centre and is open to the public on request. It preserves original gravestones; the oldest dates from 1857.
