Kraľovany is located in the Ľubochňa Gorge and at the confluence of the Orava and Váh rivers. The northern part of the municipality belongs to the Little Fatra, while the southern part belongs to the Great Fatra. The cadastral area of Kraľovany also includes an area in the Little Fatra National Park. It also encompasses the protected zone of the Great Fatra Protected Landscape Area.

This means that different landscape areas and protected zones meet within the municipality. The northern and southern classification as part of the Little and Great Fatra describes not only the location but also the clear geographical structure of Kraľovany. Rivers, mountain areas and protected land form the essential spatial elements of the place.

Landscape

A distinctive natural feature is the Kraľoviansky meander protected site. It is a rare form of river relief: an antecedent gorge of the Váh through a spur of the Great Fatra. The Kraľoviansky meander protected area covers 18 ha. The landscape and conditions in the mountain region of Kraľovany also provide a suitable habitat for brown bears, wolves, badgers and lynxes; the wildcat occurs sporadically.

The Kraľoviansky meander connects the river landscape with the spur of the Great Fatra and, as a protected site in its own right, represents the geological distinctiveness of the area. The animal species mentioned are part of the described mountain landscape, with the wildcat explicitly occurring only sporadically.

Nature and Water

There is a flooded quarry lake in the Kraľovany-Rieka district. The flooded quarry is used for recreational purposes. Thus, in addition to the confluence of the Orava and Váh rivers, a tranquil body of water is also one of the named landscape features of the place.

The quarry lake complements the river landscape with a body of water that has its own history of formation. Its location in Kraľovany-Rieka and the use of the flooded quarry for recreational purposes distinguish this landscape feature from the confluence of the two rivers.

Hiking and Cycling

The forests surrounding Kraľovany offer opportunities for hiking and cycling. A prominent destination is Stoh, a 1,607.4 m-high grassy peak on the main ridge of the Kriváň section of the Little Fatra. Stoh is a viewpoint with panoramic views in all directions, particularly of the neighboring peaks Veľký Rozsutec and Poludňový grúň.

A green-marked hiking trail leads from the municipality of Kraľovany to the summit of Stoh. A hike to Stoh leads from Kraľovany railway station via Žobrák to Stoh and then back via Žobrák to Kraľovany railway station.

The railway station is also part of Kraľovany's important railway junction. Here, Line 180 from Žilina to Košice and Line 181 from Kraľovany to Trstená meet. The described route to Stoh starts and ends at this station, while the green marking indicates the connection from the municipality to the summit.

History and Culture

The Evangelical church in Kraľovany was built between 1912 and 1913 and consecrated on October 19, 1913. The oldest surviving mention of the Kraľovany settlement dates from 1363 and refers to a trade route from Sučany via Kraľovany to Ružomberok. Timber rafting is also part of the area's history: it reached its greatest prosperity in Kraľovany and continued until the middle of the 20th century.

The church, trade route and timber rafting represent three different historical periods of the place. The consecration of the Evangelical church took place in 1912 and 1913, while the 1363 reference documents the historic route through Kraľovany. Timber rafting shaped the area's history until the middle of the 20th century and had previously reached its greatest prosperity there.
