Holiday apartment in Svätý Jur: Culture, Vineyards and Nature

Svätý Jur encompasses everything from historic buildings and viticulture to an exceptional natural area. Among preserved sections of the town fortifications, manor houses, castle history and vineyards, a diverse picture of the town emerges, which can also be explored further along paths and educational trails.

Culture

The Gothic Church of Saint George was built in the last quarter of the 13th century. Two sides and two smaller gates of Svätý Jur’s stone town walls have been partially preserved. Together with the historic buildings, these surviving structures make the town’s development tangible through specific architectural works.

The Zichy Manor House was originally built in the Renaissance style and restored in 1865. Its ground floor houses the town museum, with numerous rare exhibits on the history of the town. Another significant building is the Renesančný Dom, which is designated a national cultural monument in the cadastral area of Svätý Jur. It retains its original form from the end of the 17th century, including vaulted basement sections and an arcaded staircase.

History

The older history of the town includes Biely Kameň Castle. It was the seat of the Lords of Svätý Jur until 1609. Dating back even further is the Slavic Great Moravian hillfort complex, which was an important military structure in the territory of Great Moravia. These two historic sites represent different eras and each preserves its own part of Svätý Jur’s past.

Wine and Landscape

Viticulture is also part of Svätý Jur’s long history: the first written reference to the vineyards dates from 1270. In the vineyards, winemakers use the stones they have removed to build walls or so-called Rúny. These are piles of stones between the vineyards that also create terraces on steep terrain. The names and forms directly reflect the work involved in viticulture and the way people adapt to the natural conditions of the slopes.

The wine cellars are also part of this local context. They can be visited for wine tastings; prior registration is required for most wine cellars. Anyone wishing to include this aspect of Svätý Jur should therefore not assume that registration can be left until the day of the visit.

Nature and Trails

The Svätojurský Educational Trail is divided into an urban loop and a nature loop. The two names already indicate the trail’s different focuses: one section leads through the urban setting, while the other is dedicated to the natural area.

This natural area includes the Šúr National Nature Reserve. It is the only original alder-forest biotope of this type in Central Europe. The most suitable access to the Šúr National Nature Reserve is from Svätý Jur, near the Fanglovský Stream; the educational trail also begins there. Thus, the natural feature and the starting point of the educational trail are connected at the same described location.
